RGM introducing: our interview with Alex Kenby

Hey, Alex Kenby is here, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today, grab a brew and take a seat.

Thank you for having me, it’s wonderful to be here!

Can you introduce us to you and your musical history?

Yes of course! So, my name is Alex Kenby, I’m a Songwriter/DJ & Producer and I’m also known as K3NBY. I have been into music ever since I can remember. Music has always been around me and my family, my dad with his love of Jazz music and my mum with her love of Rock. An interesting mix of influences I know, but I thank them endlessly for it.

When I was growing up, I had some piano and guitar lessons and fell in love even more with how the way music can move you and your soul.

I then came across different Rock styles and fell in love with Linkin Park as I started going out more and more with friends. I was later introduced to Electronic Dance Music, and that’s when I fell in love with artists such as Calvin Harris, Deadmau5, Daft Punk and everything to do surrounding DJing and producing. From that point on, I never stopped looking for the next great song to listen to or to learn more skills as a DJ/Producer. In the last few years, I finally felt ready to put my visions out into the world and it feels amazing to be able to do so!

Who is inspiring you at the minute on the London unsigned scene?

Wow! There are just so many great artists to name especially on the unsigned scene. But if I had to pick one right now, I’d probably have to say BLÁNID, I think her voice and growth as an artist is amazing, I look forward to seeing her continue to grow even further.

What support is out there for new artists in your part of London?

We have recently seen quite a few studio spaces opening up around London and the surrounding area,

I think it’s amazing what these spaces are doing for new and upcoming artists & bands.

What would you like to see more of in London?

I’d love to see more venues and places support upcoming artists and what they are doing, I have seen it happening more and moreover the years, and I hope to see it continue.

What was the most fun you have had on stage?

Seeing people’s reactions when you start to mix in a song everyone knows or watching a whole crowd sing back a song to you, it’s the best feeling ever! I absolutely love it!

How would you describe your sound to an alien?

I think I would probably describe my sound as Captivating, Energetic and Inspiring, but if I had to describe it to an alien, I would probably have to call it Hybrid Music.

If you could play any music festival which would it be?

Definitely Tomorrowland, Ultra Festival or Electric Daisy Carnival. Just watching those sets makes me want to jump on stage and perform!

What makes you stand out as an Artist?

I like to think what makes me stand out as an artist is that I don’t always follow the ‘norm’. I love a lot of what is played on the radio; however, I want to bring attention to some of the blends of music that I feel the world hasn’t heard just yet, which is why I started my own Record Label – HYBRD RCRDS. I hope to, in time, be able to showcase artists who stand out but are possibly not getting the recognition they deserve. I don’t think of it as strictly a dance music label, if I believe in the artist, their project and their music is great, then I will try to support them!

I hear you have your first EP out, what can you tell us about it?

So, this has been a personal project I have been working on for the past year and a half, I have put other records out under my other alias K3NBY, and have been amazed by the reactions to them!

Now, with my first EP I wanted to show a different side to K3NBY and to also finally show the world a more personal version of myself as Alex Kenby.

Talk me through the thought process of the EP and what inspired it?

I wanted to capture the theme, emotions and feelings of an 80s inspired Sci-Fi world, but incorporate a modern essence to the sound. I wanted it to have a lot of tension and release but to also tell a story. I feel that you can really feel it in the chord progressions and melodies in this EP, as well as the vocal bridge in the second track as well.

What was the recording process like?

It was a lot of fun, I really enjoyed putting together the pieces of this project and watching it come together as a whole body of work! I feel I have really grown a lot as an artist and producer over the course of making this EP and I hope to grow even further.

What was the biggest learning curve in writing the EP?

I feel the biggest learning curve was probably allowing myself to be true to who I am and to make the sound that I wanted to, but to also be able to know what needed to stay and what needed to go from the final product.

What’s your favorite song to play live and why?

Now, I think I would probably have to say the title track from this EP, Access Code! It has so much energy and pace I absolutely love seeing people’s reactions to it!

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

I’ll be honest, it’s been a year and a half in the making and it’s gone through so many different versions and sound design changes. Now that it’s out, people can finally listen to and experience the vision I had thought of originally, so to answer your question, no, personally I would not change anything.

What are your plans for the year ahead?

Definitely to play more live events again and to also keep my focus on putting out even more music as K3NBY, myself, and growing my record label!

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

Be who you are, stay true to yourself & create what makes you happy. Lastly, more often than not, if it sounds good, it probably is good!
