Hiya folks thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today, grab a brew and take a seat.
What made you decide to start the band?
Will – I met Sam at my first open mic after my previous band had split up. I was planning to launch a solo project when Sam kindly offered to produce it. So I met up with him and Ellie at her studio (Ellie herself has since joined the band on bass). I said to Sam shall we just start a band? He agreed to play drums, then Joe joined. Initially on bass, but he later moved on to lead guitar. The rest is history.
Ellie – I’d been helping record with the lads and as I got to know them I knew that I loved working with them. Joining the band was a no brainer.
Introduce us all to the members and your musical history?
Ellie – I’ve been playing guitar for about 6 years and have played in a band called the Lost Boys then met Will and it kind of went from there.
Joe – I got into music when I was about 7 and got myself a drum kit. At first, I was into more hard rock and decided later on to learn guitar. Slowly my music taste gradually changed through playing in different bands.
Will – I wasn’t really into music until I was about 11 when I realised I wasn’t going to be a footballer any time soon. So, I just gave the guitar a spin. I was exposed to great music from an early age when I was about 2 my dad played The Cribs, The Smiths and Embrace. And when he showed me The Stone Roses debut LP that was it for me. I knew that’s what I was gonna do.
What’s your favourite song right now from another band currently on your local circuit?
Will and Joe – See The Light – The Mease
What support is out there for new artists in Derby?
Will – Well, we have really had some great support. Paul Kirkley from the Doghouse Live Stream initially had us feature on his show and eventually with a bit of persuasion became our manager. We also have on our team the most incredible graphic designer anyone could wish for – Karl Shaw. All the logos you see on the socials, tees and single covers are all designed by that legend! Everyone should go and check out his clothing brand Mr Shaw where you can buy the coolest clothes around. https://mrshaw75.co.uk
Who is inspiring you at the minute on the Derby unsigned scene?
Will – Us. Just the way things have panned out it just seems like it’s meant to be and we genuinely fully believe in ourselves to make it. The tunes are there, the lads (and lass) all look the part, and we just want to release music that means something to people.
What would you like to see more of in Derby?
Ellie – More venues for young people to play at
Will – Premier league football. All jokes aside, more bands making it out of Derby. I mean no one of note has really made it out of Derby which makes it difficult for new bands.
Joe – No one really can say that we have a great music scene like the likes of Manchester or Liverpool because when a band is coming out of there you just think “Yeah this is gonna be great! So many other great bands have come out of there!” Whereas, we have nothing to go off really.
Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories?
Will – I’ve got one. We were sent down by the music Gods to sort out the shit that’s going on at the minute. We’re only here to sort this shit out.
Ellie – Not at all
What useless party trick /talent do you all have/?
Ellie – My double jointed hands
Joe – Will and I can both do really good impressions. Mainly, Zippy from Rainbow.
What was the most fun you have had on stage?
Ellie – Every time we do an encore it’s always a mystery as to what we do and it always ends up being a funny experience. Also, it’s cool when the audience sings along.
Joe – Just playing our songs to an audience knowing that they love it and we love it.
What was the worst experience on stage?
Joe – Nothing really but I guess someone tried to talk to me mid song asking me to play Wonderwall.
Ellie – Playing to an empty room
Will – When anyone asks for Wonderwall or Mr. Brightside I instantly fall out with them haha.
Tell us something about each member that you think people would be surprised about?
Ellie – Sam is a total metalhead Will- he’s a lightweight but a proper rock and roll star/ he’s also a derby fan. Joe looks suspiciously like Ringo Starr
Will – I am banned from the EA servers for buying FUT coins on eBay
Joe – I laugh like Elvis
Which one of the band is the most unpredictable and why?
Ellie – Will because you can never tell what kind of mood he’s in
Will – We’re all very predictable. I can tell exactly what each member is gonna do.
Which one of the band is the biggest nightmare? (Just a bit of fun)
Ellie – Will and Joe you can’t single one of them out they are a package deal and they’re just absolutely crazy whenever we’re at the studio or anywhere for that matter
Will – Sam, he is super difficult to get hold of.
You have one phone call and you have been locked up for a crime you didn’t commit? Which member would you call first?
Ellie – Sam at least he’ll send me some curry
Will – Joe
Joe – Will
What’s your biggest achievement as a band so far?
Will – We’re playing a sellout show with The Sherlocks at the Venue, Derby in October and one with Rats in Sheffield. Both are gonna be fucking awesome.
Ellie – The awesome video for ‘State Of Mind’ that we recently released.
What makes you stand out as a band?
Ellie – I think the fact that we all are just great friends we communicate well and share a lot of banta throughout our performances and just have a bit of fun
Will – Quite simply, our songs are better than anyone else’s, we have a cracking album fully written and we fully believe we have the potential to be the next big band of our generation.
I hear you have a new single brewing, what can you tell us about it?
Ellie – It’s already out! It has great production and a quality vibe
Will – State Of Mind is out now, it’s brilliant, go stream it! It’s the song I’m the most proud of out of anything we’ve done so far.
Joe – The riff is just full of nostalgia and takes you back to a better time. The way it all happened was just magic as well.
Talk me through the thought process of the single?
Will – I wrote the riff in a guitar store. On a guitar I actually went on to buy due to the fact that I wrote the riff on it. Then a few days later my band had kicked me out and I was heartbroken. So, I wrote the song about carrying on, battling through and coming back better than ever. Which eventually did happen since now I’m in Marseille
I am living the dream and writing the best songs I’ve ever written.
Ellie – It usually starts with Will writing a song and then he shows us so we all write our own part and me and Sam record it
What was the recording process like?
Will – Again this is the reason why the song is just so magic because when we first started arranging it we struggled in rehearsals due to it being quite complex. We were dreading recording it as we thought it would be tedious.
However I had some of the most fun I’ve ever had recording a track.
Ellie – It’s an interesting process, of course me and Sam are left to all the work hahaha. Basically we just pile in the studio hit record and let the magic happen
What was the biggest learning curve in writing the single?
Ellie – I think just learning to cooperate and have fun while working and being productive has been a hard one because we all are friends we just want to chat and mess around so it’s hard to balance the work and fun
Will – Nothing really. We just experimented a bit with acoustic guitars to layer the lead and that worked a treat. This is something we will almost 100% be doing with our other jangly tunes.
Would you change anything now its finished?
Ellie – No I think ‘State Of Mind’ is one of the best songs to have come out for a long while production wise and song writing wise
Will – I feel like I’ve gotten better at singing since we recorded it so I would love to have another go at some point down the line. Maybe on the album version. Who knows?
What are your plans for the year ahead?
Will – Maybe we’ll treat you to another single, I’m not sure.
Joe – We also hope to announce something incredibly awesome in the very near future!
Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?
Ellie – I’m just the bassist, what do I know? Lol.
Joe – You can join the movement on our all our socials: Twitter – @marseilleband Instagram – @marseilleband Facebook – Marseille – Band
