RGM Introducing – the Malthusian Trap

Introduce us all to the members, how did the band get together?

Hi we are the Malthusian Trap and is currently made up of myself Douglas Bishop and James Cox (Coxy).

Originally we were in a band and that kind of came to an end so I started a band with with another guy and that became The Malthusian Trap, then Coxy got on board because we needed a guitarist and another songwriter to tighten up the sound.

What good bands are coming out of Plymouth at the minute?

There is a couple of guitar bands floating around and to be honest you struggle to find anything a bit different, apart from some of the grim artist, although that isn’t really different nowadays.

What good bands are coming out of Plymouth at the minute?

Well, there’s your truly and… nah it’s hard at the moment. What with the lockdown, there’s no gigs and gigging is the best way to meet other bands.

What’s your favourite song right now from another band?

Mine is ‘Carousels’ by the Doves and Coxy’s is ‘I’m not your Dog’ by Baxter Dury

What support is out there for new artists in Plymouth?

We don’t have any idea about that as we’ve never received any, not that we are complaining but that’s just the way it is.

Who is inspiring you at the min?

Loving the streets and Slowthai right now.

What was the most fun you have had on stage?

The best fun on stage definitely has to be the time our old vocalist steamed off stage because he wasn’t happy with the gig and left myself and Coxy on stage, we ended up having a jam and it went down a storm.

What was the worst experience on stage?

Worst experience is the numerous empty gigs when we first started the band, particularly when playing to just other musicians who were there to play also. Hate it!

Tell us something about each member that you think people would be surprised about?

I’m pretty fluent in Romanian language due to my Mrs being Romanian, Coxy had a cuppa coffee in an derelict mansion with Matt Alright off Rouge Traders, work that one out.

Best gig you’ve been to that you weren’t playing?

I don’t know really we’ve been to that many but at a push I really enjoyed the oasis gig at knebworth in 96. Coxy’s favourite gig was Blur at Plymouth pavilions… crap venue, great band.

What advise would you give your younger selfs?

Mine is don’t hang around with people who are negative as just bring you down and Coxy says just keep doing what you doing.

Whats your biggest achievement as a band?

To be honest we haven’t achieved what we set out to do yet but to date it’s recording with Jon Burton, sound engineer of numerous big bands such as prodigy, Bombay Bicycle club, Richard Hawley and Biffy Clyro to name but a few.

What makes you stand out as a band?

As much as possible we try to do everything ourselves, obviously we right our own music, we also mix the tunes, create the music videos, make our own branding which includes all the art work, we also do a podcast called Through the trap Door, where we talk about things ranging from the serious to the utterly ridiculous. It also pains me to say we do all our own marketing which can be an absolute drag.

Right now, whats pissing you off the most? (Cant say the virus 🙂

I tell you what’s pissing us off the most is having to listen to shit cover songs, recorded by shit recording artists that go to number one 1.

Tell us about a time when you had a proper reyt laugh while you were all together?

We did a photo shoot on Dartmoor during the Beast From The East, we got snowed in, stranded in this weird place called Princetown by Dartmoor Prison, there was a pub involved, actually two pubs but had to leave the one as someone had a heart attack and we had to leave.  Had to stay over the night and utter chaos ensued.  Mountain rescue and everything.

I hear you have a new single brewing, what can you tell us about it?

The new single is out now.  It’s called Pleasure Room and is the start of a run of single releases.  It’s about losing control and dancing in the sun, it’s a metaphor for embracing the simple pleasures in life.  Something that I’m sure most people can appreciate at the minute.  The music video is mega too, Coxy makes all our music videos and this one was shot with fan footage of lockdown and has us running around in gas masks acting a bit weird and mental. We’ve got another one in the pipeline which is a cross between Baxter Dury and Gorillaz.

Whats coming up in 2020 for the band?

2020 is a myth.  We’ve got more singles coming out, music videos too, you can keep an eye out for releases on our Spotify and Facebook page.  I reckon maybe a gig or two later on in the year depending on the obvious, we miss taking the music to the people.

As I’ve said we do a podcast called Through The Trap Door, we’ll be doing a few of them.  It’s on YouTube, spotify, and all the other podcast platforms, it’s a good laugh, you should check it out.  We’re looking for guests at the minute, so if anyone wants to get in touch with us on social or email ([email protected]) we’ll consider having people on.  Maybe you could come on it Carl and we’ll have a chat about Reyt Good Magazine?

Cheers for the review we thought it was decent! Much appreciated.

Carl has accepted the invitation to go on the podcast and check the RGM Review here👇
