RGM Introducing – The Metal Byrds

Hiya folks thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today, grab a brew and take a seat.

Introduce us all to the members?

Suzanne Birdie is lead vocals Sly Rye is guitar Kevin Kurt’s is bass And Alex Romanov is drums. Kevin and Alex have just recently joined the band in the last 2 months.

What made you decide to start a band / become an artist?

Suzanne and Rye started this band because we were in another group, and we decided to head out on our own in 2017, and for our own band and write our own material. And here we are 3 years later.

So tell me a little bit about you and what you like doing for fun?

Well, all of us are all about music. That’s what we all love and what’s fun. None of us are really sportspeople or have a lot of other interests, but music is life.

Whats one question you’re sick of being asked when interviewed?

LOL, no questions I get sick of. This is all very new to us, so it’s still exciting to be interviewed.

Which one is the biggest pain in the arse? (Lateness, forgets stuff etc.)

LOL, I would say Suzanne. It’s typical that it’s the girl who’s the most difficult. She’s very sweet but she had times where she can be a pain because she’s very organized and has these lists that she sticks too.

What is the unsigned scene in Austin like at the minute?

Right now, everyone in Austin is struggling. Signed or unsigned. Austin is the live music capital, and no one can play because of COVID. You take a risk by going to a gig right now that only half or a quarter of the people who are normally there, can come out now. It’s all really difficult.

What good bands are coming out of Austin at the minute?

Austin is very diverse, musically. There are tons of great live bands and tons of great studio bands. It’s hard to pick out just a few.

What’s your favourite song right now from another band.?

Man, that’s a hard one. I would say 09:10 by Wild Horse. Those are boys from East Sussex, and they have great energy, and can really crank out some great punk-pop tunes. Right now that’s my fave.

What support is out there for new artists in Austin / America ?

Not too much. There is no real direction for bands that are starting out to go in. At first, we really struggled with how to get ourselves out there. A PR agent actually reached out to us, and he helped us with how to’s more than anyone. We are still navigating our way thru, but I just wish there were more resources in the USA for new artists.

How easy or difficult do you find picking up new fans to come to your gigs?

Is all done by words of mouth, mainly. Austin, like I said, has a great music scene, so if you sound good, people will show, especially on the weekends when people want to hear new music and go out and have fun.

What was the most fun you have had on stage?

We played a party for one of Rye’s friends, and the energy was just right. Suzanne sang like a songbird, and we all sounded right and we were on fire. It was magical.

What was the worst experience on stage?

So far, nothing yet. We’ve had bad days, but nothing terrible.

Tell us something about each member that you think people would be surprised about?

Lol OK. Well, Alex can dislocate his shoulder on command, Rye is a first responder, Suzanne burps a lot, and Kevin is very quiet but has a big personality once you get to know him.

Best drink to have on stage?

Who is the biggest named band you have played with?

Ah, no one. But one day we hope we can play with someone we’ll know. We’ve had a lot of requests to play with other indie bands around the world. One day we will.

Tell us a funny story from backstage?

On the way to a gig one day, Suzanne got a coyote. She got on stage like a pro and sang great. As she was walking off, she threw up all over the place. She said all she could think about was the blood and guts she still had to clean off her car. After making fun of her for a while, we helped her clean her car. It was hilarious.

What goes into your favourite sandwich?

Well I can tell you what doesn’t. Suzanne hates pickles, and Rye cant have cheese touch meat. Alex loves marmite, and Kevin isn’t picky.

What advice would you give someone going into the music industry?

Get on Twitter and advertise yourselves in any way. Make friends with other bands and ask them lots of questions. Always keep writing and recording new songs, and never let anyone get inside your head and get you down.

What advise would you give your younger self?

Keep following your dreams, and don’t be discouraged by people telling you NO.

Right now, whats pissing you off the most? (Cant say the virus 🙂

Honestly, politics in America. I don’t think I need to say any more.

Tell us about a time when you had a proper reyt laugh while you were all together?

We always have a great laugh when we’re together. Suzanne and Rye are the jokesters of the band. They make things very fun.

Whats your favourite song to play live?

Machine man, for sure.

I hear you have a new single brewing, what can you tell us about it?

Yes we do. Dreamin, from our third album due out next month, Life In 20. Dreamin is a raucous, slice of high energy, classic rock and roll. Power pop vocals, with ripping guitars and soaring riffs. This is a 21st century reload of pure rock and roll.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

Yes, please keep supporting indie music. There are a lot of great bands out there that need support.

Thanks for doing us today folks, all the best and keep in touch.
