Hiya folks thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today, grab a brew and take a seat.
What made you decide to start a band ?
I remember always trying to play the guitar that was standing in my parents room, even before I could walk really. The guitar has attracted my attention and interest since I can remember. It seemed so romantic and cool to me. I really started playing a lot after seeing a Chili Peppers documentary when I was 10. This was also the moment that playing in a band became my goal.
Introduce us all to the members?
Lets seeeee. We have Simon aka The Salmon on the bass, Mathew aka band daddy on the drums, Jonathan aka Pit Man on the guitar, keys and backing vocals and then there is me. My name is Floris aka Breekteef. I have no clue how to translate that so just typ it in google translate if you want to know haha. Oh and I am the singer and guitar player!
How positive are you feeling now we are in 2021?
We are a positive bunch of dudes. Last year, despite all the shit happening in the world, was a really good year for us. Even if there are many restrictions in 2021, we’ll make sure that we can work within them and do a lot of cool things.
How influential is manchester music for Dutch indie bands?
I think every indie band is inspired by at least one band from Manchester such as The Stone Roses, Oasis or The Smiths. I think Pale Waves are from Manchester right? Love them!
Is playing the UK as important a milestone as UK bands going over to mainland EU?
Well, going to the UK can be a big thing for bands from the EU. Depending on how you do it. But overall I would say yes it is a milestone. The UK has been insanely influential in music and still is so to go there to let your music be heard is a big thing. But I do think that if band need to get a visa this is going to change because smaller bands can’t afford to do that. But then again, maybe that just makes it a bigger deal to go to the UK. We’ll see.. We toured the UK once and that was a big thing and we’d love to come back. Dates are planned but lets see how it goes!!
How is brexit going to affect things for you guys or has it already?
A lot of uncertainty. I have no clue if we can go to the UK when COVID is gone.
Is it as impactful on touring european bands as it is UK, in that would they just bypass the UK on their EU tours now? Or is it that important theyd jump through the hoops?
There has to be a way to tour the UK. For us personally I can say that we’re going to try as hard as possible to keep coming to the UK.
Whats one question you’re sick of being asked when interviewed?
What is the unsigned scene in Groningham (Holland) like at the minute?
What good bands are coming out of Groningham at the minute?
Mind Fuji! Check them out. I heard Ten Years Today is pretty solid too but I never actually listened to them.
If your fans could remember one thing about you what would it be?
Happiness and energy! Those are two things but I think they overlap hehe.
What useless talent do you have/ party trick?
I can jump over my own leg, or dislocate certain body parts haha. Pretty useless.
What was the most fun you have had on stage?
Toooo many examples! Playing with the band is the thing we like the most in the entire world!
What was the worst experience on stage?
Oh well there are several haha. Throwing up in a toilet one minute before showtime because of exhaustion, getting drunk and stoned after a show without knowing that there was a second show that we had to play, playing with a broken leg, not hearing anything but bass guitar during our first concert etc. But that’s all worth it. We hate cancelling shows so something really terrible must happen before we do that.
Tell us something about each member that you think people would be surprised about?
Simon: Has a foot fetish
Mathijs: Is a vegetarian
Jona: has a hole in his body in an unusual place
Me (Floris): I have a weird penis
Tell us a funny story from backstage?
Whats your biggest achievement as a band?
In my opinion our biggest achievement is our creative, flexible way of working. Whatever happens, we stay positive and make things happen. I’m proud of my bandmates for that. In these times it takes a lot of resilience to bring people together and organise things within the boundaries of what is possible.
Right now, whats pissing you of the most? (Cant say the virus 🙂
Tell us about a time when you had a proper reyt laugh while you were all together?
Whats your favourite song to play live and why?
Thanks for working with us on your single premiere, tell me about your new single and how it came about?
Looking For Faces is the title track of our debut album which will be released on March 12. We wanted to write a song that had the air and feel of songs like Portuguese Knife Fight or It’s Just Forever by Cage The Elephant. These songs are quite simple in structure and guitar riffs but really make me feel something.
The song is about finding your own face and the journey it’s a part of. Along the way you find yourself on the highest peaks and lowest lows, “looking for love on the faces of the people on the street” after a break-up or passing of a loved one. These experiences impact you. On this album, and specifically this song, I discovered that for as long as you observe the world around you, think about what you see and trust your intuition, life will indeed shape you, but you can add your own signature to it. And then everything starts to become more fun…
Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?
Thanks for doing us today folks, all the best and keep in touch.
Thank you for all the support! It really means a lot to us. Lots of love from all of us <3
