ALLA IGITYAN

RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW ALLA IGITYAN

Hiya Alla, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat.

What made you decide that music is a thing for you?

Ever since I was little, music has been the one thing that could completely transform my feelings and make me forget about everything else. It worked like magic, and I knew my life would be incomplete without it.

Introduce us to you and your musical history.

I’m Alla, a singer-songwriter based in Berlin. Although I have a technical background, music has always played a central role in my life. I write songs about the experiences and emotions we all share as humans, and I hope that listening to them helps you feel more connected and understood.

What’s the live music scene like in Berlin right now? Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)?

The music scene is perhaps my favorite thing about Berlin. Most nights of the week, you can find an open stage, enjoy some live music and discover so many talented artists who have come here from all over the world to create.

I’ve seen a lot of people struggling for support recently online. What’s your view on the industry?

I’m trying to stay positive about the changes happening in the music industry right now. One good thing is that artists have more control over their careers without necessarily needing to get signed. Of course, these changes can also affect many people negatively. When recorded music first became a thing decades ago, a lot of musicians were worried about their jobs, and there were even strikes. Now, we can’t imagine life without recorded music. So, who knows? We’ll just have to wait and see how things play out.

Tell us two truths and a lie about you.

I used to host a musical program on the Public Radio of Armenia.

I have a Master’s degree in Systems Programming.

I’ve done a 10-day silent meditation retreat.

Do you ever worry about people taking things the wrong way or cancel culture? Discuss….

I was raised in a very judgmental society, so, yeah, I guess I do.

Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories? If not, why not?

My favorite conspiracy theory is that everything is going to be okay…

What was your best experience on stage?

Even though I perform solo most of the time, my best and most fun experiences have been playing with others.

What was your worst experience on stage?

I got up on stage to play at an open mic, and in the middle of the song my mind went completely blank. I couldn’t remember the lyrics to the rest of the song… that I had written.

Tell us something about you that you think people would be surprised about.

I’m very introverted. Not sure why people often find this surprising.

I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?

I have a new single called “Better”! You can think of it as a feel-good breakup anthem. It’s a folk-pop song about finally getting over someone who you thought you’d never be able to shake off.

What was the recording process like?

I worked remotely with Gerry Hirschfeld, a US-based producer, and recorded my vocals here in Berlin.

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

Don’t make me go there now! Ask me in a few months and I’ll probably give you a list of things.

What are the next steps you plan to take as an artist to reach the next level?

I’m working on releasing my first EP this year, and I’m hoping it’ll be followed by lots of songwriting and live performances.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

Just want to say thanks. Thanks for listening to my songs, for supporting me on this journey – whether it’s coming to shows, watching my silly Instagram reels, or sending me encouraging messages.
