RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW AMERICAN ARTIST ONISM E
Hiya folks thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today, grab a brew and take a seat.
What made you decide to start the band / become a soloist?
I saw Melissa Etheridge live when she was touring for her first album. I wasn’t even a teenager yet but she blew me away and I knew I wanted to do that…I wanted to learn how to play guitar and I wanted a rock-n-roll band.
Introduce us you / all to the members and your musical history?
Sure. So we have Raj Arenas on the drums, Chris “Lefty” Vargas on guitars, Chris “CeeRod” Rodriguez on bass and me. My name is Eline Chavez and I play guitar and write the songs.
Whats one question you’re sick of being asked when interviewed?
Ha. How tall are you? I know, I am pretty short…I am 5′.
Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories?
Uh, no but yes kinda. Ha. Raj and I bonded over the bigfoot phenomenon. Ha.
Did you buy anything you don’t need in the pandemic?
We all did. Ha. Mostly cool instrument related things. I finally got a dream guitar I had my eye on for a bit. I got a Duesenberg. I didn’t need it but it happened. Also, lots of randomness off Amazon. Ugh. Ha.
What useless party trick do you have?
I hide and take naps in closets when I am tired of partying. Does that count? Ha.
What was the most fun you have had on stage?
When we are all in that pocket, that’s when I have the most fun. At those moments, music is just an extension of who I am.
What was the worst experience on stage?
We have had our share of bad sound guys. That never makes it fun but you have to power through and hope it sounds okay out there, ya know.
Tell us something about you / each member that you think people would be surprised about?
Hmmmm…Raj was in the military. Lefty sold cars for a while to get by, which he hated. CeeRod and I played in a band together when we were teenagers. He has a degree in education. I am a huge women’s soccer fan and have been lucky enough to go to the last two Women’s World Cup finals.
If you had to describe your band/music to an alien how would you describe it?
What kind of alien? Ha. Green or gray? Don’t ask me why I know that…Just another way I spent time during the pandemic. Ha. Damn that Discovery Channel! Haha.
What makes you stand out as a band/artist?
I think we are somewhat of a throwback. We are old school in a lot of ways. We are soulful rock-n-roll. We play live, live. If that makes sense.
Right now, what’s pissing you off the most?
I try not to think about that too much but the world is a crazy place right now.
What’s your favourite song to play live and why?
Hmmm. Right now, probably our newest, Lin Manuel.
I hear you have a new single, what can you tell us about it?
I wrote it during the pandemic. It’s about the everyday struggle where I question my place in this industry. “What am I doing? Should I keep playing? Should I keep working towards this goal?” I know it’s a common artist struggle but during the pandemic, that voice got louder and I started questioning my next steps.
Talk me through the thought process of the single?
I usually have an idea of the direction I want to take a song so I put it together and then send it to the guys to do their thing. I trust them to put their spin on it so it’s pretty organic. It’s an open forum when we get together and I always encourage them to push each other creatively. We are pretty new as a band so we are still getting comfortable with each other but I think we are headed in the right direction.
What was the recording process like?
I have a new studio so it made it easier but it took time and patience to lock tones in and get the vibe right. We record the drums live and then build around it.
What was the biggest learning curve in writing the single?
This new studio was a learning curve for me. I was use to my old setup and could lock things in quickly. I really had to spend time getting comfortable with the new room and mics.
Would you change anything now it’s finished?
That’s a loaded question because I could pick at it all day if you let me. I usually just have to get it out the door and make my peace with it after the 1000th edit. Ha.
What are your plans for the year ahead?
Another single and more live music. We are working hard to stay healthy and out of harms way so that we can keep going in 2022.
Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?
