Hiya Ash Red, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat.
What was life like for you before you got into music?
Fairly boring, we didn’t really have much else to be at. I suppose it gave the few of us with nothing else going on a new outlet.
What’s the live music scene like in Cork right now? Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)?
Always a few good acts going around Cork. Really liking Ether at the moment, having gigged with them before and looking forward to working with them again in future.
It seems like being a social media curator has become added to the many jobs of a musician, how do you feel about this?
I suppose the industry is ever evolving, as a means of marketing I guess it’s fantastic but I feel it creates a sense of superficiality at the same time. We would rather be writing songs than coming up with captions.
How do you manage engagement on your socials?
The three of us are logged into the account, anyone who reaches out we keep in good contact with, you always see the same heads liking and sharing posts and the interaction is a nice sense of community we get to build.
What’s your view on the Music industry today?
I mean you get the hand you are dealt, but the rise of AI content and the state of the pop charts are a bit depressing. Nonetheless there’s good music being made you really just have to look for it.
Where do you feel you currently sit within the music industry?
Right at the very bottom.
What was your best experience on stage?
Opening for PIL was pretty sweet. To be fair we have always been fortunate with the crowds we get at our gigs. The audience interaction really makes it worthwhile you can really feed off the energy.
What was your worst experience on stage?
A few too many beers were had. The less said about that the better.
Tell us something about you / each member that you think people would be surprised about.
I suppose people are surprised when Arthur tells them he’s a solicitor in training.
Tadhg’s work-life balance is interesting to say the least, running mostly off black coffee and the thought of a full night’s sleep.
Isaac being quite reserved still surprises us when his excuse for missing band practice is that he is out of the country (having told no one😂)
I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?
It’s exciting for us as we are really starting to find a capacity to convey more complex emotions in our music, which sounds a bit cliche albeit. To step from the usual topics of angst and develop our sound to the topic of self-destruction in our new single DB COOPER.
Our upcoming album hopes to explore these themes in greater depth.
What was the recording process like?
Long. I mean the three of us are good buddies but after a full week in only our company we’d need a bit of a break after it.
That being said the craic is good and we have a laugh and a joke. To be fair Youghal is such a nice location so working with Claycastle Studio is always a pleasant experience.
What was the biggest learning curve in writing the new tunes?
Writer’s block is always a thing, but most of our stuff has been written with well over a year. We have a pretty communal process where we can start with any bit of a song and build from it.
Would you change anything now it’s finished?
I suppose it’s never going to be perfect so there’s no point getting hung up over everything, but across the board the three of us are happy with what we have done. It comes back to the over and back dialog in the studio, we all come to a shared vision for what we want.
Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?
Keep an eye out for the album, we shouldn’t be too long releasing it.
