MICHAEL ELLERY

RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW MICHAEL ELLERY, WHAT HAPPENED?

Hiya folks thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today, grab a brew and take a seat.

What made you decide that music is a thing for you?

I was pretty much brought up in music. My dad self taught himself piano and guitar, and wrote songs regularly! I was also brought up in a church and was a part of the music team, so Music has kind of been a part of my life since the beginning! Wasn’t until after school that I decided that Music as a career was something I wanted to pursue!

Introduce us to you / all to the members and your musical history.

My name’s Mike, and I’m a cinematic composer/producer! I’ve been writing and creating music for film and TV for the last probably 8 years and recently decided to step into creating full songs, with vocals. I’d created the music bed of Save Me and reached out to TY who we met through some Sync-related FB Groups, and he was keen to write for it, but suggested we also reach out to Jess as he’d done some songs with her, and thought she’d be able to write a great chorus for it. TY is an up and coming hip-hop artist and Jess is an up and coming Jazz/soul artist, both from the US and i’m over in Aus!

What was the first song you heard that steered you into a music path?

Probably something from Muse… that or Pendulum! I went through phases of styles, from dubstep to drum and bass, to rock, to orchestral. So I don’t know if there was one particular song!

Where do you feel you currently sit within the music industry?

A newbie, but keen to keep pushing upward! I feel like the niche I’m in with Cinematic-pop isn’t as saturated as say your standard pop, so I feel like I stand a good chance of surviving and getting somewhere haha

What’s the biggest thing you have learned from someone else in the industry?

Collaborate! I wish I had done it sooner, but collaborating with others only improves your music! Just being able to work with other people who can bring a different perspective to your songs is so good!

Tell us something about you that you think people would be surprised about.

I have no qualifications in music, (apart from a Certificate IV in songwriting) and have pretty much self-taught myself music production through youtube, and just experimenting.

I hear you have new music, what can you tell us about it?

Save Me, is an epic pop/hip-hop crossover about fighting back against generational trauma and negative patterns, and taking back control of your life. Starts out relatively small, but towards the end builds and breaks out into an epic battle of rap and melodies!

TY and Jess did an awesome job on it! We’re also releasing it on a new platform called EVEN. This platform is looking to shake up the way people support the artists they love and provide a great way of connecting with the artists, and creating community around the new releases! It’ll be up on EVEN 2 weeks before it hits the streaming services! You can find it here!

What was the recording process like?

So I wrote the instrumental and sent it off to TY who thought to introduce Jess into it too! So they just recorded their parts and sent them back to me! I put it all together, played around with the production and then they sent back more parts just to help build it out! It was really simple and easy, and I think we got the song done in a matter of weeks!

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

Nah! I think it’s awesome and love the way it’s ended up!

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

The song’s about breaking generational trauma and negative patterns! The only way we do that is by opening up about it, talking with our family, and our friends and seeking help! You can do it, Jess believes in you, TY believes in you and I believe in you. That’s at least 3 people!
