Hiya Breadcrumbs thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat.
What was life like for you before you got into music?
None of us can remember that long ago. But it must have been bland. The band has its fair share of music obsessives. Can’t imagine any of us without music. What would we argue about?
What’s the live music scene like in North Tyneside right now?
Fantastic and really healthy with a great diversity of sound including a space for us middle aged men to make music.
There’s loads of interesting new local bands, many venues and a vibrant scene. We are lucky to have such champions of music like Mark Elliott (The Engine Room, North Shields), who runs an excellent venue and really looks after the artists.
Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)?
Yes. Nev Clay, one of the greatest songwriters from the region is finally getting the recognition he deserves. Single Black Olive: seeing them live is a special treat.
They play original surf music and Italian film scores amongst other stuff. In the post punk world, we have Bugman and Charts and Graphs and for exciting old school rock from excellent young musicians, TV Death. There’s Pit Pony, Lanterns on the Lake, Du Blonde. We could go on……
It seems like being a social media curator has become added to the many jobs of a musician, how do you feel about this?
We hate it. We can’t do it. We don’t understand it.
How do you manage engagement on your socials?
Poorly. Hoping our kids will help out.
What’s your view on the Music industry today?
Well it’s lucky we aren’t trying to make a living out of it or have any misguided dreams of penetrating the mainstream.
Music is listened to very differently now through streaming services and only a very few can make a living from music, so we feel for younger talented artists who perhaps have even less of a chance of the success they deserve.
However, it’s not all doom and gloom. Thanks to the local music scene, the small independent venues and great fans paying to see bands and buying records and merch, new music continues to thrive.
Where do you feel you currently sit within the music industry?
We sit at the bottom of the food chain in the music industry where the breadcrumbs fall down the back of the sofa.
Whats the biggest thing you have learned recently as you progress with your music?
Find promoters who believe in what you are doing and get your music out. We are lucky that we have this amazing creative outlet which continues to excite us and that we can have fun with.
What was your best experience on stage?
We absolutely love playing live and the audience singing along is pure joy.
What was your worst experience on stage?
No sudden movement such as knee bending. An ungraceful crouch to get a guitar to feed back was laughed at heartily by fans.
Tell us something about you that you think people would be surprised about.
The second youngest band member is going to be a grandad soon.
I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?
We’re very proud to announce our second album’s release, The Breadcrumbs on 30 June. We are delighted with it. We’ve been told the songs talk to each other despite being diverse in style.
It’s a dark, but also playful take on the world and our place in it.
Our new single So Sticky (taken from the album) has had much acclaim and some radio play which we are chuffed with. The second single The True Navigator is out on 18th June.
What was the recording process like?
Longer and more complicated than we’d hoped. Although rehearsals in the lock up still prove to be an antidote for the crazy world we live in. We love rehearsing. Recording requires consideration and diplomacy. We are all big babies in that department and we need to learn when it’s time to go to bed!
What was the biggest learning curve in writing the new tunes?
Songs need a little time to develop before being put to record. We need to temper our excitement and let the songs breathe for a little while. However, not overthinking the songs is important too. Finding the balance is the difficult part.
Would you change anything now it’s finished?
If we could re-write a few of the monumental fuck ups we experienced, that would be great!
Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?
As part of our merch, we have the lofty dreams of writing a Breadcrumbs recipe book.
