RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW BRIGHTON BAND HYBRID KID
Hiya folks thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today, grab a brew and take a seat.
What made you decide to start the band?
Jesus, it’s been so long now I can’t even remember. I guess I must be a masochist.
Introduce us to the members and your musical history?
Danny – Guitar/Vox – been playing in bands since aged 15. Started out playing prog, lots of outfits, spandex, smoke bombs. We’re not so big on-stage gear now, unfortunately.
Tim – Bass. Always played in bands…John Wayne Army during the 90s…cowpunk/men in suits kinda thing, Robb Johnson’s guitarist before getting poached by Danny.
Fabio – Drums – Played in tribute band in Italy, featured on the front of drummer magazine
What’s one question you’re sick of being asked when interviewed?
What genre are you?
Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories?
All of them. Hoping for the Illuminati to invade earth in spaceships and get wiped out by the covid virus Russia is spreading
What useless party trick do you have?
I play the spoons
What was the most fun you have had on stage?
Recent gigs have all been fun…we’ve got to a place where we can enjoy ourselves on stage…rehearsed well enough to loosen up
What was the worst experience on stage?
Guitar bridge just…exploding ..during the first song at an important festival date that I’d decided not to take spare to
Tell us something about you / each member that you think people would be surprised about?
Danny isn’t really a control freak
Fabio is a really nice, charming, witty guy…and he’s a drummer!
If the record deal doesn’t come through Tim is gonna be a postman
If you had to describe your band/music to an alien how would you describe it?
Accessible catchy cool guitar music
What makes you stand out as a band/artist?
I think we sound pretty original…unclassifiable
Right now, what’s pissing you off the most? (Can’t say the virus )
Nothing really…I’m pretty happy!
What’s your favourite song to play live and why?
Freeze Frame is fun…seems the heavier we play it the better it goes down!
I hear you have a new single, what can you tell us about it?
It starts out with a lightness of touch, flickering, repeating, fragile fingerpick which works it’s way in before the other instruments join, building the sound until the drop where the mellotron and theremin expand everything. Then it just soars.
Talk me through the thought process of the single?
It’s a different tack for us, we’re usually more upbeat, garage rock in style. This one just came out a lot more mellow and we just went with it
What was the recording process like?
Very good. We record everything live to catch the band vibe then go in and re-do and adjust parts, it’s pretty quick and creative
What was the biggest learning curve in writing the single/album/ep?
Maybe to spend a little more time on post-production
Would you change anything now it’s finished?
Nah…it’s better to just move on…if anything bugs you THAT much just re-record it sometime.
What are your plans for the year ahead?
Gigs! Gigs! Gigs! It’s just so nice to be playing live again
Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?
Just hang in there folks. It seemed like the lunatics had taken over the asylum for a while there but I’m optimistic they’re on the way out, fingers and everything else crossed. Your friendly neighbourhood Hybrid Kid.
