RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW CALIFORNIAN BAND VELVET STARLINGS

Hiya folks thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today, grab a brew and take a seat.

What made you decide to start the band?

We met at a cage the elephant show and got to talking about music and found out The Who, cage the elephant and Jack white were all of our favourite band.

Introduce us to the members and your musical history?

Alex – guitar

Foster – drums

Hudson – bass

Christian – singer

What’s one question you’re sick of being asked when interviewed?

So tell us about yourself

Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories?

YES! Paul McCartney dead, Illuminati, and some crazier ones we won’t go into…

Did you buy anything you don’t need in the pandemic?

Every album king gizzard ever released on vinyl

What useless party trick do you have?

I know all the chords to every tenacious D song ever, if the occasion arises.

What was the most fun you have had on stage?

When we played Beachlife 2022! We gave our album to Brian from weezer and it was super fun.

What was the worst experience on stage?

We played in Liverpool at the cavern and I blew up my keyboard and guitar pedals

If you had to describe your band/music to an alien how would you describe it?

I’d say: check us out, you probably won’t like us as much as Radiohead – because we assume that’s what you listen to, but we’re like… almost as good

What makes you stand out as a band?

Well we’re too loud to be pop music, and we’re too colourful to be punk music, and we basically make a kind of music that only a couple people would like – but somehow it works out

Right now, what’s pissing you off the most?

New Marvel shows 🙂 and Disney

What’s your favourite song to play live and why?

Colours on the canvas, because it’s our quietest song but we play it LOUDEST

I hear you have a new album, what can you tell us about it?

Pacific Standard Time is our next album! It’s gonna be crazy. While our 1st album is a very cohesive sound, the songs sound like each other. This album is not the same case. Every song is 180* degree turn from the next.

Talk me through the thought process of the album?

We recorded in 2020 but couldn’t release it, so we recorded our “1st” album Technicolour Shakedown after and put it out first! PST was supposed to be our Debut.

What was the recording process like?

We recorded in Eagle Rock, Los Angeles with Joel Jerome (LA Witch, Cherry Glazerr) at his “Psychedelic Thriftstore” it was pretty trippy.

What was the biggest learning curve in writing the album?

Well the album is essentially a compilation of VS tracks from 2017-2019 that never got released

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

Maybe more distortion on it? But I always think everything needs more.

What are your plans for the year ahead?

We just got into UK yesterday! Our first show is tonight and we got 17 more dates. So stoked!

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

We can’t wait for you all to hear our new album!
