Hiya cmon, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat.
Thanks for joining us today… Tell us bit about where you are from and how you got into music?
Hey, thanks so much for having me! I’m from lot’s of different places and kind of nowhere at the same time. Originally from Spain but moved here when I was around 5, bounced between Norfolk/London/Lincoln and now Sheffield which I’ve called home for quite a few years now, it’s got some real aura to it. If we’re talking music generally I have a brother who played guitar and I was always fascinated and loved watching him play, when I turned around 12 I begged my dad for a guitar as every young musician does I guess and started learning smoke on the water, yes this interview will probably be full of cliches, i’m sorry…
What’s the live music scene like in Sheffield right now? Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)?
It’s very much alive and kicking, the DIY scene is so, so good at the moment. There are some amazing venues like Cafe9, Guitar Shack, Sidney and Matilda, Yellow Arches etc all putting on some very cool and intimate shows and even pubs like Dog and Partridge which hosts unplugged folk floor shows where you get 30 people in a small backroom singing and playing together, its very joyous and everyone is so welcoming and approachable, there’s something for everyone, and everyone is generally very good at what they do so it’s been a total blast getting into it.
Do you think its easy to become a victim of of our surrounds sometimes?
It’s for sure easy to become complacent where you are and not move that dial much, I think that’s the same with everything in life right? Either way my surroundings at the moment are fresh and new and very vibrant so I think i’ve still got some time before i become a victim to them.
Whats your favourite social media platform to use and why?
Have you heard of club penguin?
We believe its essential to have a presence on Facebook, Instagram and X to introduce yourself to all the different types of audiences out there, what’s your thoughts on that?
Obviously if I could get away with not using any of them that would be great but you have to play the game. Of all of them i’d rather use instagram anyways, I feel like my music isn’t going to land with the 60 year old reform voters on facebook and the 12 year olds on TikTok and X is owned by Musk so fuck that.
What’s your view on the Music industry today?
Music Industry is too vague of a term at this point because it encompasses major label pop music all the way to the small DIY punk acts who play because they love having a good night out with their mates. IF we’re talking majors then cesspit, but if we’re speaking about indie labels who care about the music and musicians then they’re doing the lord’s work.
Whats your thoughts on AI generated music?
It can get in the bin.
Whats the biggest thing you have learned recently as you progress with your music?
Im not perfect, and my music doesn’t have to be either.
What’s currently in your ears and on rotation at the moment?
Shit, i’ve only been listening to Meaningless by Jon Brion and the entire Elliot Smith back catalogue for the last year. AND NO I’M NOT DEPRESSED (ok maybe a little)
What was your worst experience on stage? Any funny stories to share?
I think the last show I played before I left my old band Youth Killed It, mostly because I was sad it was the last show i’d be doing with the boys.
Got any fun, funny stories from life on the road?
Yes but as we all know you never share your road stories with the general public!
I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?
I’m releasing this new one called ‘sink down to you’ . It’s very pretty I think, much like the lyrics it kinda just flowed out of me one night. It’s about the transient nature of relationships, how we meet, come, go, merge through each other, like waves or oceans. leaving impressions or creating vortices that change who we are. Fuck the human condition is kinda messed up right now isnt it?
What was the recording process like?
I recorded the song (and the rest of the project) at my home studio, it’s all recorded into a Tascam Portastudio 424MKii using a single Shure SM57 about half a meter away from me and the acoustic. I then play and sing at the same time, that’s one take, i then do a second take where i double track the acoustic and vocals, it gives it this lovely ethereal sound, Elliot Smith did it much better than me though but he was a genius I guess.
Would you change anything now it’s finished?
Nah because the whole premise of this release is that it’s not meant to be perfect or polished, I think AI generated music pissed me off so much that i’ve reverted to caveman recording methods.
Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?
Yeah don’t be a knob and abolish ICE.
