RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW D3PRT

Hiya D3PRT, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat.

Thanks for joining us today… Tell us a bit about where you are from and how you got into music?

I am a UK producer based in Hertford, just outside of London. My original music tastes were more rock, but I got into The Prodigy and then drum and bass in my late teens. I loved that scene and going to D&B nights, and then other genres entered my world like dubstep.

What’s the live music scene like in Hertford right now? Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)?

I’ve moved out of London now so my going-out days to drum and bass nights are a lot less than they used to be. Hertford is just a fairly normal town that has some live music — I think George Ezra is probably the most famous one from here.

Do you think it’s easy to become a victim of our surroundings sometimes?

Yes. I’ve made some of my best music living in the countryside with no distractions.

What are your ambitions for the band?

No big expectations really — I just want to keep making music and releasing it.

What’s your favourite social media platform to use and why?

For promoting, Instagram — but I really try to avoid doom scrolling.

We believe it’s essential to have a presence on Facebook, Instagram and X to introduce yourself to all the different types of audiences out there, what’s your thoughts on that?

Yes, it’s part of the game. I’m sure many bands over the years have resisted it, but ultimately it’s a great tool to promote your art.

What’s your view on the music industry today?

I was in the music industry about 15 years ago and signed to an electro label, and it was a very different world. We released on vinyl and Beatport was our big source of sales. Now I’m doing it myself and it seems to be all about playlists on Spotify.

What’s your thoughts on AI generated music?

Not for me. Some of the best stuff I’ve made has been by mistake or just messing around — that can’t be recreated. It’s a moment that accidentally happened. But there are ways to utilise AI for workflow.

What’s the biggest thing you have learned recently as you progress with your music?

Get on Spotify playlists.

What’s currently in your ears and on rotation at the moment?

Overmono, Four Tet, Health, Borne.

What was your worst experience on stage? Any funny stories to share?

Many, but probably having a big slot at a breaks night DJing and my DJ partner skimped on the CD quality and burnt the tracks to cheap CDs. We cleared the dancefloor because the CDs kept skipping constantly.

Got any fun, funny stories from life on the road?

Many, but cannot say here.

I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?

My latest track is called TEN. It’s a dubstep / garage vibe — the more aggressive side of my work.

What was the recording process like?

It was written using VSTs, some external synths, and lots of processing in Ableton.

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

Maybe make it slightly shorter.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

I just appreciate anyone who takes the time to listen to my music, so thank you.
