RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW ELLE

Hiya Elle, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat.

What made you decide that music is a thing for you?

I started having piano lessons in school, and it seemed to be the only thing I was good at! I really took to it. I would escape at lunchtimes to go and play the piano.

Introduce us to you and your musical history.

I started piano when I was 8 or 9. Before that I remember having recorder classes which were the highlight of my day. When I was quite little I remember having a portable CD player and some Top of the Pops CD’s which I danced around to. Then came the era of illegal downloads in the 2000’s and it was cool to have all the latest pop music our friends were into on your MP3 player/iPod nano.

I’ve seen a lot of people struggling for support recently online. What’s your view on the industry?

I’m only just beginning my journey in the music industry, but already it’s clear that it’s very difficult for artists to make an impact in the current scene. Everything is diluted.

Where do you feel you currently sit within the music industry?

I don’t really feel a part of it yet, I’m totally new.

Tell us two truths and a lie about you.

I love ginger tea. I can’t sing. Elephants are my favourite animal.

Do you ever worry about people taking things the wrong way or cancel culture? Discuss….

That’s kind of what Day by the Lake is about – me basically growing up and realising that you have to just do what’s right for you and accept that people usually get it wrong!

Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories? If not, why not?

What’s a conspiracy theory?

Tell us something about you that you think people would be surprised about.

I’m actually a really boring person.

What are the next steps you plan to take to reach the next level?

I find it difficult to look too far ahead, and this EP feels like a major milestone for me and is probably enough for now. I do have some more songs which I am working on, but progress is slow. I can’t rush.

I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?

Day by the Lake took about two years from the first song to the end result. I didn’t know I was going to write an EP, I just started feeling like the songs I’d been writing were fitting together thematically, and I felt it was about the right time to start trying to do something with them.

What was the recording process like?

I record a demo consisting of piano and vocals at mine, then I send the demo to a producer, who makes it sound like a proper song.

What was the biggest learning curve in writing the new tunes?

I feel like I’ve learned so much as a result of this songwriting endeavour. I’ve learned that to create art is to learn about yourself. I’ve learned that pursuing your art excessively and obsessively is the best route to success! I’ve learned that even if I think something is going terribly today, everything may have completely changed by tomorrow.

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

I am always tempted to change things but now it’s out there I think I should draw the line.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

Just a thank you if you’re reading this or are supporting my music!
