Hiya Father’s Moustache, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat. Thanks for joining us today… Tell us a bit about where you are from and how you got into music?
We’re Father’s moustache, a 4-piece alt rock band from Leeds. We have all been brought up around music, all stemming from different genres which has influenced our writing style and stage performances. We all come from very musical backgrounds, all growing up playing instruments and looking up to inspirations in the industry.
What’s the live music scene like in Leeds right now? Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)?
The music scene is really strong, there are some great bands up and coming that we’ve played with, One in particular being Hooligan, they have released a class tune recently. Whenever we have played gigs round leeds, especially with it being our local city, our crowds have been fairly full with high energy, so it’s in a strong place.
Go on then, where the band name come from?
We were sat in kirkgate market, and our mate goes “My dad walked past a pub called My Father’s Moustache.” Eventually after a few days of sitting on it we committed and locked it in! Took a few days for us to be convinced but we all feel content enough with the name and like the uniqueness of it. Been so great feedback so far, so that’s what matters!
What are your ambitions for the band?
We all want to leave an impact on people, with will’s lyrics being quite emotional, our riffs being big and crunchy, and it’s already showing, the impact that it has had so far on the people we have played the tunes to, we want for people to not just listen to our music, but also feel it emotionally.
Whats your favourite social media platform to use and why?
To be honest, we all hate doing social media, we are terrible at keeping on top of posts, stories, promotion and whatnot, but all in all it’s something we are really looking to work on. If we had to choose, it would have to be instagram, its our most followed account and is a lot easier than the rest to manage and use, and we’re fairly consistent on it compared to any others
We believe its essential to have a presence on Facebook, Instagram and X to introduce yourself to all the different types of audiences out there, what’s your thoughts on that?
Out of all three, instagram is one of the only ones we’ve used consistently, I know we should lock down on the other platforms and i know the benefits, just never actually started using them.
What’s your view on the Music industry today?
It’s very oversaturated, a lot of famous tunes in the modern day are proper pop tunes, and you rarely hear guitar songs and bands on the top flight radios. My best example is leeds fest, if you look at the lineups from the 2000s there were a lot of guitar bands, playing heavier tunes and riffs, but now it’s full of rappers and mainstream music, like travis scott, dave, sombr, those kinds of people.
Whats your thoughts on AI generated music?
No. sums it up well enough. We believe that when people have put blood, sweat and tears into an art that they love and value, and got nowhere with it, it’s out of order that these AI artists can publish unoriginal music that gets them so much money and attention when there are people grafting their entire lives and getting nowhere. We have strictly stayed away from anything AI based, we want full originality from our own creative minds within the band.
Whats the biggest thing you have learned recently as you progress with your music?
Not everyone will agree with everything – listening to each other and understanding each other’s opinions and ideas, though some may not be a good as others, every opinion is valued!
What’s currently in your ears and on rotation at the moment?
Will: i’m really loving black country, new road at the minute, love the emotional energy behind their tunes, i can really tell they love what they do
Ben: i’m really into Sublime and Status quo, i’ve always been a huge fan of Ska and hard rock
Maciek: i’ve been spinning Schlangenheim by black midi on repeat, RIP matt kwasniewski-kelvin
Sam: Never enough by turnstile, my all time favourite band, absolutely love it
What was your worst experience on stage? Any funny stories to share?
We played a show in Stockton-on-tess, there were fights in the venue during the headliners, we had 5 people in the room at most so venue was empty, the band before us was a covers only band and played 30 minutes over their set time, it was shambles.
Also, our first show with Sam, the new drummer, Will’s guitar string snapped on the first song, his strap kept falling, we played way too fast, but despite all that it ended up being quite a good show funnily enough!
Got any fun, funny stories from life on the road?
We had a load of chavs try stealing our equipment in Stockton, the same show where people started scrapping in the venue during the headliners. That whole show was really shambles, stockton was a really dodgy place and the people we were around during that show were slightly rough. The headliners were lovely lads and were really apologetic about it. We’d love to work with them again, just not in Stockton! Another story was when Will had to break up a scrap outside the venue after our debut headliner, we had played a class set we were all raving on about how good it was, and a couple of people got a bit rowdy in the street outside. I’m sure we will have plenty more experiences like that!
I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?
We are so happy with the new tunes, we have 3 recordings at the new studio and can’t wait to release them. We love the new sound, the mix is incredible and we are so happy with them. Poster Boy is the first tune we’re releasing, and we can’t wait for people to hear it!
What was the recording process like?
It was long, Ben and Sam ended up falling asleep in the studio two of the days, but overall it was good fun! We all had a good creative input, we all listened to each other, and we are all very content with the outcome. Gus (producer) was a really nice fella, gave us some really good advice and feedback, and we couldn’t be happier with the direction we went with it.
Would you change anything now it’s finished?
We all love the songs, we have a few bits on one of the songs called Behind Dead Eyes we recorded that we could alter and could’ve been more polished, but we do think these flaws add to the rawness of the tune. Apart from that, we all feel like the tunes are more than perfect and better than we had ever expected!
Is there anything else you would like to share with the world
We are releasing Poster Boy, our new single on Friday 27th February! We are also playing Royal Park Cellars on 27th March, tickets are on skiddle, get yerselves down!
