RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW FHMY

Salam Alaykum FHMY, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a halal brew and take a seat.

What made you decide that music is a thing for you?

Pretty sure its from all the god awful metal snob era I had back in 2015, and my Dad introducing me to Nirvana back in 2012

Introduce us to you all and your musical history.

Grew up listening to grunge and nu-metal bands, had an unfortunate snob period from 2016 to 2020 of prog & Death Metal and that’s when I picked up learning the bass. Broke up with my college girlfriend and started listening to American Football, then realized slowdive and Aphex Twin are very cool in 2021, which asserted my virginity and started doing my own demos.

What’s the live music scene like in Cairo right now? Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)?

Cairo gigs are either very cool, shut down by the government or cause public incidents. In all cases very fun

Loads of cooler guys & gals than me, Ali Refai, Martina, No Marche, Kiiko, barakat, Hadi Birjakli & Maya ma. Loads more to name, just saying off the top of my head

I’ve seen a lot of people struggling for support recently online. What’s your view on the industry?

Welcome to capitalism, it’s quite the display,

Zuckerberg’s a lizard, or so people say.

They think Gates cured malaria, that much ain’t true,

But Spotify’s CEO? He can f*ck off too.

Where do you feel you currently sit within the music industry?

Had a cool feature on Bandcamp daily, a dude fist bump me for making him cry, and a random message asking “if I would have sex on my music” so I think pretty well for a debut year

Also the answer is no.

Tell us two truths and a lie about you.

I’m Egyptian

This interview sucks

I make music

Do you ever worry about people taking things the wrong way or cancel culture? Discuss….

Honestly, my music can be taken in alot of wrong ways but thats fine, as nothing is objective. But cancel culture? You only have yourself to blame, reap what you sow.

Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories? If not, why not?

Nice try CIA

What was your best experience on stage?

Realizing its fine to skip the bathroom before a gig sometimes

What was your worst experience on stage?

Realizing its not fine to skip the bathroom before a gig sometimes

Tell us something about you  that you think people would be surprised about.

I am pretty much content with my life, people think I am some sort of sob boy making intense music, I just have a complicated past and I like making people think about their lives and reflect.

I also kind of like f*cking with people, but that’s very well known about me.

What are the next steps you plan to take as a musician to reach the next level?

Studying more production, working on sampling, focusing on making things sound harsher and rougher

I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?

Aphex Twin went to a bar, had a fight with the guys from Boards of Canada; the guys from Boris tried to calm everyone down, while Micheal Gira from Swans was giving a speech proclaiming himself as god.

What was the recording process like?

Absolutely beautiful, even if it was frustrating at times to have whats in my head as “reality”. But it was truly an overall pleasant experience working with top notch Cairo musicians

What was the biggest learning curve in writing the new tunes?

Not going insane as my ADHD takes the driver seat

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

Not a single thing

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

Go outside, touch some grass, smell the fresh Sulfate air as our world becomes more consumed by corporate overlords, embrace that the all consumerist society is replacing all forms of natural human interaction and say out loud “I am free”.
