RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW JADE BARBARA

Hiya Jade Barbara, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat.

Hi RGM, thanks for having me!

Thanks for joining us today… Tell us bit about where you are from and how you got into music?

I’m from Sydney, Australia, which is a crazy incredible place. I’ve grown up here my whole life and I’m still in love with how beautiful it is.

Ever since I was born I’ve always loved music. I’ve been writing original songs since I can remember. None of the songs made sense of course haha, but they’d always manage to get stuck in my family’s heads.

So I’ve always been creating my own songs, but it’s only been until now that I’ve graduated that I’ve decided to start taking things seriously with my career.

What’s the live music scene like in Sydney right now?

To be honest, I think there are more small artists and bands performing than people in the audience these days. Of course festivals and concerts are still huge, but there aren’t as many people striving out to their local bars to watch the next door band type of thing.

Despite this, it makes me very grateful to the people who do watch, and anyone is an audience so I could never complain.

Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)?

I’m friends with a lot of the Sydney-bands and they are all incredibly talented. If at least one of them doesn’t hit mainstream success soon, I’ll be super shocked. I say keep an eye out for bands.

Do you think its easy to become a victim of our surroundings sometimes?

Definitely, which is why I think it’s so important to surround yourself with supportive people and organisations.

A strong mindset is crucial too. Comparison breeds insecurity when you aren’t confident in yourself.

What are your ambitions as an artist?

My biggest dream is to one day sing my own original songs about my own feelings to a crowd and hear the lyrics sung back to me. Like how cool would that be?

Whats your favourite social media platform to use and why?

Instagram, partly because it’s the main media used by most of the people I know, but also because it’s easy to post all types of media. I take lots of pride into my photo feed.

We believe its essential to have a presence on Facebook, Instagram and X to introduce yourself to all the different types of audiences out there, what’s your thoughts on that?

It definitely makes sense. I think as the generations evolve, it’s really interesting to see the demographics of each social media shift as well. I’m not even sure I have my best friend on Facebook.

What’s your view on the Music industry today?

All of the songs these days are under 2 minutes long. It’s crazy. I know it’s to do with social media and our attention spans shortening, but as someone with severe ADHD I can still appreciate a good 5 minute song and a beautiful bridge.

What’s your thoughts on AI generated music?

Last time I checked, AI doesn’t feel emotion. It would be insane to expect any kind of quality music with it. I think AI has it’s own categories and place in this world, but replacing creativity is not one of them.

What’s the biggest thing you have learned recently as you progress with your music?

How important mixing & production is. I can’t believe when I was 16, I’d record vocals on a headphone mic, stick it into BandLab, add maybe a little reverb and off it’d go to distributors. Insane.

What’s currently in your ears and on rotation at the moment?

Last month I was fixated on Britney Spears’ whole catalog, with songs like ‘Radar’ and ‘Piece of Me’ on repeat. I’ve got Hearts2Hearts’ newest song ‘Rude’ playing a bunch as well.

I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?

Yes! My newest song ‘Breathe (A Little)’ dropped today. It’s the first song I’ve taken seriously within my discography, and put a lot of time and effort into. I really like it.

What was the recording process like?

I recorded it alongside a few other unreleased songs last September when I was experimenting on Logic Pro for the first time. I was experimenting with storytelling, so I wrote the lyrics on the spot and tried to mimic a girl who was in the middle of a club ranting about her boyfriend to him. Lines like “Yeah, you’re mean” in the bridge wouldn’t usually be in my songs, but I felt like it matched the premise.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

Early last year my father passed away, who was my long time best friend. I ended up in my HSC last year as well, so I could never manage the time to get any music out, and my last EP ‘Ultraviolet’ wasn’t promoted or finished in the way I would’ve liked at all.

Now that I’ve healed and taken a step back from it all, I’ve found real motivation and time to put quality into my work now, so I’m super excited about what the future holds. There is a lot more greatness coming very very soon.

Thank you so much for interviewing me RGM!
