Jon Lloyd Palmer

RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW JON LLOYD PALMER

Hiya (Jon Lloyd Palmer), thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat.

What was life like for you before you got into music?

I have always been involved in music since I was a child – choirs, orchestra (cello), piano, church organ, choir master and of course guitar

What’s the live music scene like in (Petworth) right now? Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)?

The nearest live music scene is in Guildford, but Petworth has a well-known festival for classical and jazz music. I used to be involved in a local music club, but this closed some years ago.

It seems like being a social media curator has become added to the many jobs of a musician, how do you feel about this?

I am very uncomfortable about this but realise that it is necessary.

How do you manage engagement on your socials?

I try and do it myself but seek help from other sources.

What’s your view on the Music industry today?

I have been playing music for 50 years and I still enjoy the music of a few decades ago.

Where do you feel you currently sit within the music industry?

I am more interested in songwriting. The songs on this album are a selection of those have been written over the last 50 years. I do home recording playing most of the instruments or use a local studio with one other musician. More recently, I have used AI to improve the production, but the songs are all original.

What’s the biggest thing you have learned recently as you progress with your music?

I have learnt that use of the computer (MIDI, AI) has become essential, but they are great tools for the less known or proficient musicians. Also, I have used AI to change the voice to a female voice should the song require it.

What was your best experience on stage?

I rarely go stage performances, though I used to play around bars and music clubs. Very occasionally, I play with other bands at functions.

What was your worst experience on stage?

Many years ago in Canada, when I misread what the bar audience wanted to hear.

Tell us something about you that you think people would be surprised about.

As you probably realise, I am no longer that young and I am now retired from a career in industry but still enjoy writing songs – particularly about events in my life.

I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?

The latest album is a collection of some of these songs written over many years.

What was the recording process like?

The first album (2020) was recorded in a home music studio during lockdown. The second was recoded in a studio with other musicians and a female vocalist when required. The latest one was a mixture of my recording studio and computer enhancement.

What was the biggest learning curve in writing the new tunes?

Usually, the songs come in one go – tunes and lyrics – depending on my mood. Whilst they always need some adjustments/finishing, they are effectively conceived in a few minutes.

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

You are always critical of the songs after they have been released as you can always hear bits that you could have done better. You are never satisfied.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

My biggest pleasure would be if someone else – better than me – took up and sang the songs as a cover
