RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW KEVIN JOHNSON

Hiya Kevin Johnson, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat.

What was life like for you before you got into music?

Good. I worked for the Government in the Department of Main Roads, wanting to get out of the office. I finally did, and the Department was glad to see me go.

What’s the live music scene like in Sydney right now? Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)?

The live scene has tapered off in recent times, due to a number of factors, but is starting a resurgence at the moment.

It seems like being a social media curator has become added to the many jobs of a musician, how do you feel about this?

Being unskilled in the world of social media, I am not overly crazy about that but it does have its advantages.

How do you manage engagement on your socials?

Not very well, unfortunately.

What’s your view on the Music industry today?

Each generation has its own direction. At any time there will be outstanding works that will live on, and those that don’t. There are current things today that will stand the test of time.

Where do you feel you currently sit within the music industry?

A teller of stories, and a performer of different musical styles.

Whats the biggest thing you have learned recently as you progress with your music?

Just to stay true to the idea that came to you, not to try to make that idea fit a current trend.

What was your best experience on stage?

Appearing on stage for the first time, and hearing the applause.

What was your worst experience on stage?

At a charity concert featuring other performers, I told an amusing story onstage, that, unbeknown to me , had just been told by another performer, to the same audience, a few minutes earlier.

 I got no laughs.

Tell us something about you / each member that you think people would be surprised about.

I was a staff songwriter for the Nashville Country Music Publisher Tree (Sony/ATV) for 2 years.

I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?

This is a selection of some songs I’ve written and recorded over the years.

What was the recording process like?

In the earlier stuff I worked with session musicians, and in later recordings I used a few key players and did a lot myself.

What was the biggest learning curve in writing the new tunes?

Inspirattion can’t be rushed, you have to wait for it to come.

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

No, not really. I never finish things until I am completely happy with them.
