Hiya KID HYENA thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today, grab a brew and take a seat.
What made you decide that music is a thing for you?
Quite simply to have fun & express ourselves and to create a band that no-one can replicate.
Introduce us to you all and your musical history.
We are musical spiders with web links from Torquay, Wiltshire, London through to Berlin, Brighton & Barcelona.
What’s the live music scene like in Plymouth right now? Anyone we should be looking out for (Bar you of course)
The scene in Plymouth is on the up with a very supportive & collaborative network of musicians. It misses one or two dedicated small venues that would help lift things up. Anyone worth looking out for? Anyone who’s out there doing there thing is worth a look & support.
I’ve seen a lot of people struggling for support recently online. Whats your view on the industry?
Although ambitious, we don’t really pay much attention to the industry, our focus has always been to play gigs and reach out to an audience that way. The repercussions of that are much more positive than being industry focused. It’s quite easy to burn out and lose heart if you are not careful.
Where do you feel you currently sit within the music industry?
Sat in stealth on a throne wearing a crown of independence & a cloak of abundance.
Tell us Two truths and a lie about you.
We have re-written ’The Revolution Will Not Be Televised’ by Gil Scott Heron.
We would like to cover ‘Youth Against Fascism’ by Sonic Youth.
You will find us at a Oasis reunion show.
Do you ever worry about people taking things the wrong way or cancel culture? Discuss….
Absolutely not! In fact we seek a reaction, much of our live show is quite openly political & fiery, we have obvious good hearted intentions so it would be hard to believe that people would take things the wrong way.
Gigs in the south west can take you to quite conservative audiences sometimes and its pretty satisfying to whip them up and eventually have that audience singing along to songs of social justice.
Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories? If not why not?
It’s worth noting that Kid Hyena were abducted by aliens in 7 months ago, they who showed us that the earth is flat and Covid is actually a malevolent greek goddess.
What was your best experience on stage?
Realising that people get it.
What was your worst experience on stage?
Playing to aliens after having illusions shattered.
Tell us something about each member that you think people would be surprised about.
Matt & Maria delivered improv comedy workshops in Dartmoor prison for 18 months. Dan is a soundscape designer.
What are the next steps you plan to take as a band to reach the next level?
Next steps are to magnify the parts that make us original & also possibly open the act out to new members.
I hear you have a new music, what can you tell us about it.
Our new album ‘It Takes Courage To Be Happy’ arriving on streaming services on October the 24th is very much a creation that came off the back of post pandemic touring of the UK for the 18 months. Many of the songs took shape across that journey. In an effort to reclaim our souls after the pandemic lull we bought an old motorhome and hit the road, it was an awesome experience and massively shaped us as an act.
What was the recording process like?
To be fair it was long, we wanted to capture the songs very simply & this created some challenges when it came to mixing. We wanted it to have a very specific vibe which we did not quite hit at first, then after various remixing we got there in the end.
What was the biggest learning curve in writing the new tunes?
Give loads of space to let them grow with the audience at gigs.
Would you change anything now it’s finished?
Go back in time and ask Rick Rubin he would be up for taking the project on.
Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?
More new music is coming next year!
