LAYLA KAYLIF

RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW LAYLA KAYLIF

Hiya (LAYLA KAYLIF), thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat.

What was life like for you before you got into music?

Boring as hell.

What’s the live music scene like in (South East London) right now? Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)?

No idea really. I don’t go out much. I’m sure there’s some great band around though. Personally, I’m only going to do a live show when I can have all the bells and whistles because I want it to be a spiritually elevating experience, not a gig in a pub.

It seems like being a social media curator has become added to the many jobs of a musician, how do you feel about this?

Not a fan of social media myself.

How do you manage engagement on your socials?

By not posting much.

What’s your view on the Music industry today?

Same as it always was really. The industry and I got divorced a long time ago, and we maintain an amicable relationship, which means we ignore each other and since we don’t have kids, it seems to work fine.

Where do you feel you currently sit within the music industry?

According to Curious For Music, I am “one of the UK’s most intriguing under-the-radar voices… a boundary-walker between genres and cultures.” So, I’ll take their word for it.

Whats the biggest thing you have learned recently as you progress with your music?

Less is more.

What’s currently in your ears and on rotation at the moment?

Rosalía’s new album : LUX

What was your best experience on stage?

People walking out.

What was your worst experience on stage?

People walking out.

Tell us something about you that you think people would be surprised about.

I like ants.

I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?

It’s a cover of David Bowie’s “I’m Afraid of Americans”, released on the 10th anniversary of his passing. It’s got a Middle Eastern vibe, which I think is appropriate. I hope he’d approve.

What was the recording process like?

I did it with Johan Bejerholm in Sweden at his World Music Studios. I said, let’s record a cover of “I’m Afraid of Americans” for shits and giggles. I think I brought out the beast in him. He usually does polite pop. Actually, I sound a bit different on this track. Growly. I’m not usually…growly.

What was the biggest learning curve in writing the new tunes?

I can’t always accommodate my very demanding muse.

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

Well, if you mean  “I’m Afraid of Americans”, nothing, because I didn’t write it, David Bowie and Brian Eno did. But I do have an album coming in Feb, this is the second single off it. Would I change anything? Of course! I’m never happy with what I’ve done, always wanting to improve.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

No really. I think I’m getting sick of the sound of my own voice.
