RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW LLEOW WHAT HAPPENED?

Hiya Lleow thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today, grab a brew and take a seat.

What made you decide that music is a thing for you?

It was not really a decision, actually it was more a very strong feeling I had tried to fight for a very long time. But at a certain point I felt I’d explode if I don’t do it. Turns out it’s the most rewarding thing ever done, emotionally at least.

Introduce us to you and your musical history.

I was always a singer but didn’t pursue that, as it didn’t fit the roles I had to fulfill. 2 years ago though I started taking lessons at a vocal coach that encouraged me to go on with my songwriting and helped me with it too and when done, we’d go to the studio together with some really good musicians and record 3 singles. It all went very fast and sometimes it overwhelms me what I have accomplished already. And I can’t wait to take the next steps.

What was life like for you before music?

It is actually a quite good life, I have a family, I have a career. Still I am a person that always stands out in some way, I am always the “non conform” one, be it because I act or dress or speak differently. So fitting in is a challenge for me in my everyday life. That’s where music helps me, it gives me the chance to express all these feelings of not quite fitting in, of not belonging there, maybe even of not wanting to be there. So I’d say, life before music was more stable but also more boring.

What was the first song you heard that steered you into a music path?

Yungblud – Life on Mars. Was the first live show I’d gone to after the pandemic and that was definitely the point where I was certain I’d go for it now.

Where do you feel you currently sit within the music industry?

Outside ☺

What’s the biggest thing you have learned from someone else in the industry?

Not to apologize for the music I make if I feel it doesn’t meet somebody’s expectations.

Tell us Two truths and a lie about you.

I question myself all the time.

I am a great driver.

I love it when people whistle.

Now you figure out which is the lie ☺

If you could wish for one thing to aid your career what would it be?

My first intention here is to say “that one of my songs becomes a viral TikTok thing”. But I suppose that’s too short-minded. I think to continue meeting all these creative, inspirational people that I have met since I started, and maybe to get to work with more of them, supporting and empowering each other, would aid my career as it would enable me to unfold more and more.

Do you ever worry about people taking things the wrong way or cancel culture? Discuss….

Oh, I’ve actually given up worrying too much about it. I wear my heart on my sleeve and sometimes I’m not sensitive enough about certain topics. But in general I respect everyone’s feelings, I just can’t abide by all these unwritten rules because I don’t even know many of them. I’m an empathetic woman and I think I can tell what’s right and what’s wrong. And sometimes I use that to deliberately provoke things.

Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories? If not why not?

No. Just no.

What was the worst experience on stage?

Being so focused on hitting a certain note that I forgot the lyrics and we had to restart the whole song.

Tell us something about you that you think people would be surprised about.

Have thought about something funny to say here, and there are quite some things that came to my mind. But I think I should use this opportunity to tell the thing that people are most surprised about when I tell them.

And that is that people experience me as energetic, always fun, powerful and tough and are very surprised when I tell them that I have days where I hardly get out of bed because I am so tired, my body hurts and my thoughts all black.

So that not all is always shiny, Rock ‘n roll and “fuck it all”. It is important to take care of myself then in order to perform, to create and to be myself again, show that middle finger to everybody trying to keep me small. I think many people wouldn’t expect that, and I wanna encourage everybody facing such issues to do the same. Listen to what you need and take care of yourself.

What are the next steps you plan to take as an artist to reach the next level?

I will work with different artists and record a few more singles until the end of the year, to try out various styles. And I try to play as many live shows as possible. Hello bookers!

Whats your thoughts on Elon Musks contribution to the world?

I have no thoughts or feelings about him directly as a person, I just feel that there should not be people that have so much power, no matter who they are. Power should be evenly spread.

I hear you have a new music, what can you tell us about it.

Yes, this latest single was released on April 26th and is called “Sacrifice”. It’s about breaking free from convention, trying to become your true self and the dilemma you find yourself in when you come to such a crossroads. About what you are prepared to sacrifice for your decision.

What was the recording process like?

Haha, god, while we recorded it I established a stable love-hate-relationship with this song. It has gone through so many versions in my mind (and also – recorded, sorry, Simon) that at one point I thought I’d just dump it.

But then all of a sudden it showed me how it was meant to be. And when I spoke this out it was perfectly clear to everybody involved, saying “yea, that’s it, this is how it should sound like”. Would have been a surprise if a song about dilemmas and being torn would have come easy ☺

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

Let’s not open this box anymore.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

Yes. Be kind to yourselves and to one another.
