RGM INTRODUCING: WE INTERVIEW LONDON BAND OPAL SKIES
Hiya Tom and Oliver thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today, grab a brew and take a seat.
What made you guys decide to start the band?
Well, Opal Skies was Tom’s brainchild initially. He grew up listening to a lot of rock music and was inspired to create a group that had similar influences but could pull from lots of different genres to offer something unique to the industry. Piers and Tom met during their first year of uni, then Piers introduced Tom to Will who introduced Oliver to the band and we’ve just been growing it since then.
Introduce us to all the members and your musical history?
So Piers is the drummer. He’s originally from Sussex and grew up listening to a lot of classic heavy rock, bands like Deep Purple and Queens of the Stone Age. Tom is the lead guitarist and is from near Bristol. He grew up listening to lots of different styles like rock, drum and bass and hip-hop. Will is the lead singer and bassist, he’s from Winchester. He grew up listening to a lot of rock and indie music like Radiohead, Muse and Pink Floyd. Oliver is our keys player and guitarist. He’s from Walthamstow in east London and draws on influences from classical, hip hop, heavy rock and jazz/soul music.
What’s one question you’re sick of being asked when interviewed?
To be fair, this is only our fifth interview. We’re not fussed yet so fire away!
What useless party trick do you have?
There’s this game called fruits and stations. If you know, you know.
What was the most fun you have had on stage?
Definitely at our last gig in London. The crowd was great and we were buzzing when we came off!
What was the worst experience on stage?
Also at the last gig, Tom’s guitar stopped working in the middle of the first song, Parasite, and had to switch with Oliver. We pulled it off though, it was quite funny actually.
Tell us something about you / each member that you think people would be surprised about?
We’re all veggie/vegan. I don’t think that’s too surprising these days though.
If you had to describe your music to an alien how would you describe it?
Well, it’s better than human music (shout out all the Rick and Morty fans).
What makes you stand out as a band?
Our live shows are pretty crazy. Also, we try and push the boundaries of our genre when we’re writing, for example one of our demos has this mental drill 808 section. So I feel like that makes us stand out.
Right now, what’s pissing you off the most?
Bojo, Putin and facists.
What’s your favourite song to play live and why?
From our released tunes, definitely Look Back. Definitely our most well known tune and the crowd always loves it!
I hear you have a new single, what can you tell us about it?
Our next single is called ‘You’. The song is about someone who becomes successful but lets their ego get the best of them, leaving his friends behind. It’s an angry song but it’s also displaying a lot of disappointment. We have a really cool music video that we filmed for this tune too, we can’t wait for everyone to see it!
Talk me through the thought process of the single?
As mentioned its about someone who lets their ego get the best of them but we wrote it around 6 months ago when we were all going through hard times emotionally and we think that shows.
What was the recording process like?
For this tune, a lot of it was done from home. We recorded the guitars, bass, synths and vocals all in Tom’s home studio. We then went and recorded drums at Dock Street Studios which is where Tom works. We felt confident the whole way through the recording process that this was going to be a great tune, we just hope everyone loves it as much as we do!
What was the biggest learning curve in writing the single?
We wrote this song together and all had equal parts in making what it is today. So I’d say learning to write as a group all at the same time, instead of people bringing ideas into sessions that are half complete.
Would you change anything now it’s finished?
Sample replace all of the drums including cymbals. Who needs live drums anyway? (joking Piers we love you).
What are your plans for the year ahead?
We have a load of releases to come, we’ve got a mini tour planned, and we’re writing all the time, so expect lots more music into next year.
Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?
