LUKE PORTER

RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW LUKE PORTER

Hiya Luke, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat.

What was life like for you before you got into music?

Honestly, I don’t remember a life without music. I started playing guitar when I was 7 and don’t really remember much before then. I grew up in an environment where music was all around and constantly being played. As ever though – I imagine my life without music would be lifeless and bleak.

What’s the live music scene like in Newcastle right now? Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)?

The music scene in Newcastle is better than it’s been in previous years. im from the coast of Newcastle (Whitley Bay) which has its own “costal scene” which is quite a recent thing and is a really friendly artistic scene of bands and songwriters which is refreshing to see.

Keep an eye out for bear park they are class.

It seems like being a social media curator has become added to the many jobs of a musician, how do you feel about this?
it’s great to connect with fans all over the world.

How do you manage engagement on your socials?

Check insights

What’s your view on the Music industry today?

Well, I think we need more funding for grass roots venues. It’s such a shame to see so many close down, like the lead mill in the field, steeped in indie history loved by so many people and the government and councils don’t give a fuck.

Where do you feel you currently sit within the music industry?

Not sure Haha we’ll see how well my single does first

Whats the biggest thing you have learned recently as you progress with your music?

Don’t chase it, let it come to you

What was your best experience on stage?

Ermmm good questing. Probably dueting with peter Doherty from the libertines at Newcastle o2 academy when I was 15.

What was your worst experience on stage?

Haha I was playing in London once and the crowd started cheering “youre just a shit sam fender” which amused me but wasn’t ideal

Tell us something about you that you think people would be surprised about.

Probably that im 6 ft think I look tiny in photos

I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?

Yes my debut single this place. I wrote the song a year ago when I was visiting home whilist living away. I spent a lot of time hating my hometown for various reasons but when seeing the other side (London) I released im from a beautiful costal town with the best people in the world

What was the recording process like?

So I recored the live instruments apart from vocals at lime tree studios in Newcastle with lyndon Philliskirk. I then went down to Manchester to properly produce the track and record my vocals at 258 studios with kris evans.

What was the biggest learning curve in writing the new tunes?

Sometimes you’ve got to dig through the dirt to get to the gold. Patience is key

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

Maybe add some strings

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

Keep an eye on my socials for new releases and gig.
