RGM Introducing – We Interview Manchester band The Matchbox
Hiya folks thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today, grab a brew and take a seat.
What made you decide to start the band?
We all moved to Manchester to start uni at BIMM in 2020, and I suppose we just stumbled across each other and thought we’d give it a shot. It seems to be going alright so far!
Introduce us all to the members and your musical history?
Lead vocals is Harrison, on guitar is Will, Frank on bass and Matt is our drummer. We’ve all been in and out of bands and studied it before but now were all at university together it’s become a huge commitment for us all.
What’s your favourite song right now from another band currently on your local circuit?
Not from Manchester – however, ’The Avenues’ new tune ‘Addicts’ has been top of my playlist for weeks. Really reminds me of them FIFA tunes you’d come across years ago.
What support is out there for new artists in Manchester?
With us studying at BIMM, we get a lot of opportunities anyway – but there’s people like OpenBeat, Stylish Riot and The Manc who want to hear your music and put on gigs all the time.
Who is inspiring you at the minute on the Manchester unsigned scene?
Again, I’d probably name drop people like ‘The Manc’ etc – when those sort of people add your tune to their playlists and shout you out on their social media pages it only makes us want to work harder and get more tunes out there!
What would you like to see more of in Manchester?
More smaller venues! I’ll never get tired of visiting new music venues.
Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories?
I find them so interesting but don’t believe any to be honest. Thankfully we don’t have anyone in the band who thinks the Earth is flat.
What useless party trick /talent do you all have/?
Matt can semi-dislocate his shoulder. Take from that what you want!
What was the most fun you have had on stage?
We played at a venue called ‘Zeros’ in Stalybridge after England beat Ukraine in the Euros – I’m surprised we could all stand up by the time it came to our set.
What was the worst experience on stage?
We played at an amazing venue called ‘The Snug’ in Atherton supporting The Lounge Society a few months back – Matt our drummer dropped a stick, guitars weren’t staying in tune, we forgot a guitar strap and I left my sunglasses there. Gutting.
Tell us something about each member that you think people would be surprised about?
Matt can in fact play the violin, Frank only wears blue jeans, Harrison only wears black jeans and Will has had a pint with Robert Plant.
If you had to describe your band to an alien how would you describe them?
Loud, sweaty and denim.
Which one of the band is the most unpredictable and why?
I think we all have our moments! I’ll take the blame for being late to practice on too many occasions!
Which one of the band is the biggest nightmare? (Just a bit of fun)
We had a gig about two hours outside of Manchester once and our bassist Frank left all the cymbals in his car back home, so he’s getting name dropped here!
You have one phone call and you have been locked up for a crime you didn’t commit? Which member would you call first?
Matt is the smart one of the band, so him I suppose. The others would only take the piss.
What makes you stand out as a band?
The T-Shirt choices of our drummer.. you’ll have to see them for yourself!
Right now, whats pissing you of the most? (Cant say the virus )
Beer prices in Manchester.
Tell us about a time when you had a proper reyt laugh while you were all together?
We went on a ‘tour’ in August – spending a lot of time in hotels, cars, and pubs together, and of course, got to play some mint venues!
Whats your favourite song to play live and why?
At the moment, I think we’d all agree it’s Moulin Rouge, but there are one or two new ones come through recently we’re really excited about!
I hear you have a new single brewing, what can you tell us about it?
We’re booked back in at the studio next month to get down our next tune… and it’s an absolute belter.
Talk me through the thought process of the single?
We knew that ‘Moulin Rouge’ wasn’t exactly a tune you would release as a single, but we just wanted to get a bit of music out there that showed people what we’re about and get the ball rolling with regards to releasing music. If you haven’t heard it already, give the B-side a listen!
What was the recording process like?
We made the mistake of going on a night out at 42’s in Manchester the day before. We were very ill to say the least! We can laugh about it now considering it turned out alright!
What was the biggest learning curve in writing the single?
We had a dilemma with the length of the song – we played around with the intro a lot and just wanted to make sure people didn’t skip before they’d even heard a lyric!
Would you change anything now it’s finished?
Of course! But that’s the same with every song. We’d still be here in 20 years if we kept changing bits.
What are your plans for the year ahead?
We’ve got some ace gigs lined up – so smash them and get back into the studio to do it all again.
Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?
Go listen to our new single ‘Moulin Rouge’! Spread the word 🙂
Thanks for doing us today folks, all the best and keep in touch.
