Hiya Mariah Jayne, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat.
What made you decide that music is a thing for you?
To be honest, I don’t really feel like there was a decision to be made, I just always knew music would be a part of my life! From a really young age I was singing and performing and that carried through into my young adult years. It’s just always felt like something I am meant to be doing.
Introduce us to you and your musical history.
I’m a singer/songwriter from Melbourne, Australia currently living on the Surf Coast.
As I mentioned, I have been singing and playing music for quite some time. I started writing music when I was at uni and went on to release my first EP in 2018. Since then, I have been writing and recording my sophomore album, with the first single, Crescent being released on the 14th of March.
I’ve seen a lot of people struggling for support recently online. What’s your view on the industry?
I feel like it’s an interesting time in the music industry at the moment. I think you have to be very driven and willing to put in time, money and a lot of energy to pursue a career in music. It can feel quite isolating in a sense, but there are people/companies and music community out there to offer advice, you just have to be proactive in looking and putting yourself out there.
Tell us two truths and a lie about you.
I once broke both my arms at the same time, in the exact same place. I hate the colour purple. I had three pet ducks.
Do you ever worry about people taking things the wrong way or cancel culture? Discuss….
Absolutely! I guess I just come back to the fact that I can’t control what others think and how they take things and if I’m being genuine and kind, that’s all that I can control.

What was your best experience on stage?
My EP launch in 2018. It was so special to be on stage with my incredible band looking out to a sea of people there to celebrate with me. It was such a wholesome experience and felt like a big achievement.
What was your worst experience on stage?
I once had a guy fall over the foldback speaker and onto my microphone stand and it smacked me right in the teeth.. that wasn’t fun! But luckily no damage done!
Tell us something about you that you think people would be surprised about.
I went overseas for the first time last year. People seem to be so shocked to hear I’d never been before then!
I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?
I do! I’m incredibly excited to be releasing new music, it’s been a few years! I have been working with my good friend/producer Mark Zito and partner, Tom Fraser on a bunch of new music. My first single, Crescent is a very special song to me. It’s the most raw and vulnerable song I have ever written. I feel it’s important for me to release this song first, to really set the tone for what’s to come!
What was the recording process like?
Mark sent me this idea he had, which was this beautiful guitar part and simple drum that you hear, and I instantly felt connected to this song. I sat down in front of a microphone at my home studio and started playing with some ideas, it came together very quickly. We recorded this song in between our home studios, which was special. I feel like it really captured the essence of this song.
What was the biggest learning curve in writing the new tunes?
I’m learning to trust myself more. I really struggle to speak up sometimes and say what I really want. If something isn’t feeling right for me or sounding like I want it to, I find it very difficult to say something. I guess it’s a worry that I may offend someone, but I have really pushed myself to work through this.
Would you change anything now it’s finished?
I actually wouldn’t change a thing! I feel like the music I’m making now is such a true representation of me and my artistry, and I’m so lucky to work with people that really enhance that by tenfold and bring my visions to life!
