RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW MATTHEW S. HORNER WHAT HAPPENED?

Hiya Matthew, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today, grab a brew and take a seat.

What made you decide that music is a thing for you?

I first picked up my older brothers guitar and tried to play it. I heard a band called blink182 and instantly wanted to play their songs… I never put it down and eventually began writing my own songs.

Introduce us to you all and your musical history.

My name is Matthew S. Horner,  I am the odd mind behind OddLisT music. This would technically be my 3rd album to date. I started releasing my music a couple years ago and fell in love with the process. Its fun. My first album was called “Outta time” I had pop punk sounds mixed with 80s synths and catchy lyrics. It had a bit more acoustic works on it. The I released “the dark room” it was a much heavier and darker album just to show off a bit and have fun. I also grew up listening to metallica type bands. So it’s ingrained in me as well. It still had some punk vibes. Now I’m 7 singles in my newest… the release is called “Undisputed “

What’s the live music scene like in Illinois right now? Anyone we should be looking out for (Bar you of course)

It’s pretty non existent in Springfield illinois… mostly country..

I’ve seen a lot of people struggling for support recently online. Whats your view on the industry?

The days of labels are in the past… honestly sync is where it’s at. Struggle is an understatement. Its all about marketing. The new guys hardly stand a chance. But it is fun as hell to get out there.

What are your thoughts on the new Co-op arena?

Sounds like it has been a struggle and a series of unfortunate events in getting it up and going. I think it could be pretty cool though.

Where do you feel you currently sit within the music industry?

Haha, I don’t think I have a place yet. I am just a pop punk dad trying to get some people to hear my songs. My only real goal is to connect with people on an emotional level. Maybe take them out of reality for 2bto 3 minutes

Tell us Two truths and a lie about you.

I adopted my 2 daughters as a single dad

My current wife is my 3rd and best friend in the world

I can play the violin beautifully

Do you ever worry about people taking things the wrong way or cancel culture? Discuss….

With me, no. I know how to stay in my lane and I love everyone. It takes way to much energy to hold feelings of hate and anger. I want everyone to be comfortable around me and know that I would do anything I can to make things better if I am able. In this current world we should be supporting each other and embrace others differences. That’s how we grow

Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories? If not why not?

I love to read about them..  but I don’t know how many I believe to be honest. I definitely believe aliens are here as well as alternate realities. Everything else is always entertaining to go down rabbit holes with.

What was your best experience on stage?

When I was in my first band, I was rhythm guitar and back up vocals. We weren’t terrible, I was young and wore some pretty crazy outfits.

What was your worst experience on stage?

One of my first open mic nights, the crowd just was not into it… it’s a terrible feeling

MATTHEW S. HORNER

Tell us something about you that you think people would be surprised about.

I love to play the ukulele . And I am the only member of OddLisT ..  I do it all myself besides mixing and mastering …

What are the next steps you plan to take as a band to reach the next level?

Back to back singles now that I have a truly talented production team.

I hear you have a new music, what can you tell us about it.

It’s called “Undisputed” it’s about when life gets you down and you put up a fight to keep going. Fight back and never give up! It’s got very exciting guitars and a soft melody in the middle. I think its really dynamic.

What was the recording process like?

Days and days writing and rewriting the guitars, then changes from my co producer Nick Giaimo. Then more days and days waiting … ha, I write in my home studio. It’s all about ambiance.

What was the biggest learning curve in writing the new tunes?

Getting proper first class recordings the right way . Double tracking everything and being able to reproduce it after changes

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

Not one thing!

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

Look me up please and follow, I’d love to build a community for artists to get their stuff out there. It really can be hard. Also, thank you and everyone that takes a second to take this in!
