RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW MIAMI ARTIST ALEJ

What made you decide to start the band / become a soloist?

When I was a child, I always knew I loved singing.  I would always put on a webcam and record myself doing covers of popular songs at the time. One day I was recording a cover of Blank Space by Taylor Swift and my sister encouraged me to try and learn to use GarageBand. I haven’t stopped since.

Introduce us to you and your musical history?

I mainly specialize in vocals and songwriting. I am also 20 years old and from Miami, FL

What’s one question you’re sick of being asked when interviewed?

How I became a singer.

We set up RGM USA to share music with America and the UK, good idea?

Of course!

Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories?

I used to be really invested in them when I was like 14. To be honest, I haven’t really kept up with them recently. But they’re definitely interesting to think about.

Did you buy anything you don’t need in the pandemic?

I used to buy an absurd amount of t-shirts from fast fashion shops like SHEIN. Only to never use them again.

What useless party trick do you have?

I guess that maybe I can eat a lemon whole without even squinting.

What was the most fun you have had on stage?

Probably either one of the recitals my music academy sets up or when I performed one of my songs as part of my High School’s theatre show.

What was the worst experience on stage?

My friend took me to an open mic at a coffee shop a few months ago and the crowd was very quiet. Then again, maybe it’s on us that we decided to perform huge bombastic songs in a coffee shop setting.

Tell us something about you that you think people would be surprised about?

That I can eat a whole lemon without even squinting? Haha I know I already mentioned that but it’s true!

If you had to describe your band/music to an alien how would you describe it?

I guess I’d say that they wouldn’t really get it.

What makes you stand out as an artist?

I feel like I have a pretty good knack for creating very catchy melodies.

Right now, what’s pissing you off the most?

Fake people

What’s your favourite song to play live and why?

My song “Too Famous for Me”  is always fun to perform live because I feel like there’s so much I can do it to engage the audience. Also a lot of my friends and family love it as well.

I hear you have a new single, what can you tell us about it?

That it’s definitely just the tip of the iceberg as far as what the new album will sound like.

Talk me through the thought process of the single?

Infectious” was written about the very moment I realized that I liked someone. A lot of people would just associate that feeling with pure excitement and bliss. And while yes it’s definitely those things, I feel like there can also be a lot of confusion and even frustration when coming upon that realization.

What was the recording process like?

I recorded this from my home studio while my producer, Andrei, did his part in his studio in London.

What was the biggest learning curve in writing the single?

Sometimes it’s ok if you haven’t experienced everything you sing about. Honestly, it just leaves more room to tell a story.

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

NOPE!

What are your plans for the year ahead?

Hopefully getting to book more gigs and having opportunities to have interviews such as this one. Also releasing my new album.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

Nothing except to keep your eyes peeled for what I have in store with this new album and era! Thank you so much for having me! 🙂
