MUTOMBA

RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW MUTOMBA

What was life like for you before you got into music?

Before getting into music my main focus was filmmaking. I’ve dabbled (and still do) in various mediums but music has probably resonated the most.

What’s the live music scene like in (ADD YOUR TOWN/CITY) right now? Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)?

Leicester is a hot bed of talented people for sure. Name’s I’d keep an eye out for are Nour, OB THE POET and Tyde. All incredible artists that you can expect to make some waves very soon.

It seems like being a social media curator has become added to the many jobs of a musician, how do you feel about this?

At its worst, social media is just a tool, I’ve found that thinking of it that way helps a lot. I’ve always had my hand in multiple mediums so it hasn’t been too much of an adaptation for me once I started doing music, but I’d be lying if I said that having a good team around you to offload some of the tasks didn’t sound appealing. Even though that’s a longer goal, for me personally the ability to be in complete control of my career has always been very important to me as an independent artist; but maybe I’m weird for thinking that haha

How do you manage engagement on your socials?

I try my best to keep some consistency but for me quality takes precedence over quantity. It’s nice to see the numbers go up but if I can share something with purpose I’ll opt for that every time.

What’s your view on the Music industry today?

I’m relatively new to it from an insider perspective haha but I think my short stint has taught me a lot about the importance of building relationships. I think music is heading in an interesting place sonically, (at least in the spheres I frequent) with artists leaning heavily towards a less refined and more organic approach to making music and I love that.

Where do you feel you currently sit within the music industry?

I feel like I’m at the front gates, looking to set up a stall on the sidewalk

What’s the biggest thing you have learned recently as you progress with your music?

Find people who you trust with your vision.

What was your best experience on stage?

The first time playing with our band, and all of the rehearsal days coming together perfectly.

What was your worst experience on stage?

Where do I begin? We did a show where there wasn’t any soundchecks so level’s were off, our bassist’s whole guitar

broke, we went on an hour and a half late and everyone had gone, and to top it off it was 30 degrees with no aircon. I think about that gig daily.

Tell us something about you / each member that you think people would be surprised about.

As a band (Cashmere) we’ve done two shows in total, both of them the universe intervened and kept our bass player from performing! He’s still yet to perform with us but hopefully 3rd time’s the charm

I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?

I feel like I’ve found my voice a lot more with the recent music for sure. Everything has come together so easily, even with the different ideas I’ve tried with some tracks; it’s seemed to really click which is nice.

What was the recording process like?

We aren’t there anymore but my friends and I had a little creative space that we shared, recorded and hung out in. Most of the new music was recorded/written there. The collaborative nature of the space meant things really happened at a wonderful pace.

What was the biggest learning curve in writing the new tunes?

I’m still learning the technical aspects of engineering, mixing, mastering etc so that’s been a chore at times. But like I said, being able to freely create when and where I want is deeply important to me so I enjoy the process more than I loathe it.

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

It’s not finished yet! So there’s a lot for me to still do, one of which is finding a good pair of ears to mix and master once I’m satisfied.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?
