RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW NEW ZEALAND ARTIST TARN PK

Hiya folks thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today, grab a brew and take a seat.

What made you decide that music is a thing for you?

It started with making covers. I always felt drawn to music but when I started making it and I would get this massive rush when you would combine sounds to make something cool. It didn’t take me very long to figure out after I started doing covers that making music was the thing for me.

Introduce us to you and your musical history.

I’m an artist from Christchurch, New Zealand, now based in Wellington. I’ve been making music since I was about 12 and have released 2 EP ‘Fantasy’ and ‘Monarch’. My musical background started with me learning the piano from a young age but I didn’t like to practice so never got any good. It all kind of picked up when I started drumming. I got into bands and started making my own thing from that point.

What’s one question you’re sick of being asked when interviewed?

I always find it hard to answer what music influences me. It always feels hard to narrow it down and at the moment I can never think of the song and artists that are really influencing me.

We set up RGM USA and many other countries including RGM NEW ZEALAND in the world to share music with America and the UK, good idea?

Definitely!

Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories?

Nah not really, I think most of them are pretty stupid and aren’t all that useful. I get why people are drawn to them though.

Did you buy anything you don’t need in the pandemic?

I bought 4 chairs for my room/studio space but I only use 1 of them and it’s really uncomfortable anyway.

What was the most fun you have had on stage?

I haven’t done a huge amount of gigs for my own music, but I do a lot of drumming in bands and some of the most fun I’ve had was getting to play percussion in a jazz band. I had some congas and cowbells and all this stuff. I took it very seriously.

Tell us something about you that you think people would be surprised about?

I’m very passionate about my curries. Nothing not to love about a curry.

What makes you stand out as a band/artist?

I think that’s always hard thing for the artist to identify in themselves, not sure if I have anything yet but that might develop in time.

Right now, what’s pissing you off the most?

My attention span. Definitely pisses me off a bit, wish I found it easier to sit down and read a book without wanting to do 500 other things.

I hear you have a new music, what can you tell us about it?

My new song I just wanted to make something that felt exciting and different. I’m always drawn to simplicity and doing the most with a small amount. It’s definitely the most dynamic song I’ve released up until this point.

Talk me through the thought process of the single

I was inspired after watching some Timberland production videos. I made the bones of the song in like 30 minutes. There was something about the way he just makes something and doesn’t think about it almost too much. From there I brought the song to Devin Abrams (who co-wrote the songs with me) and we crafted it into a full song. Then earlier this year I came back to it and re-did the instruments to what it is now with the hyper pop inspired elements.

What was the recording process like?

It’s just me sitting in my room going crazy. Time flies like you wouldn’t believe, one minute you’re doing something and the next 9 hours have gone by. Some days it’s amazing and other days not so much.
What was the biggest learning curve in writing the single/album/ep?

For me a big learning curve was crafting a stronger aesthetic balance for all the music and having all the songs feel connected and like they live in the same world.

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

Nah, at least not on this song. I might feel differently in a year but it’s just a timestamp of where I am at this point in my life.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

For the rest of the year I’m just looking to keep exploring my own musical world and also going on that journey with a couple of artists I’m producing music with. Very exciting times.
