RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW NEW ZEALAND ARTIST TAYLOR ROCHE

What made you decide to become a soloist?

When I was about 6/7 years old, I had an unhinged obsession for the Backstreet Boys and it exploded inspiration in me to be a singer and from then onwards, it’s all I’ve ever wanted to do.

Introduce us to you and your musical history?

Hi! I’m Taylor Roche; a Synth R&B/Pop artist from New Zealand. I’ve sung for pretty much all of my life – before Covid, I was a cruise ship singer so I traveled the world fronting bands onboard cruise ships (rockstar backstory hah). Being locked down back here in New Zealand for the last 2 years, I have turned my focus into writing and performing my own stories in which I’ve really honed in on crafting my sound. This is something I hope the listeners will hear shine through in this newest installment ‘similar feeling’.

Whats one question you’re sick of being asked when interviewed?

I once got asked ‘what’s one secret people would be surprised to know about you?’ …but like that’s the whole point of a secret right?

Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories?

That Krabby Patties are made from crab meat and that Mr Krabs is low key a cannibal. Take note that he is the only crab in town (i know what you did Mr. Krabs).

Did you buy anything you don’t need in the pandemic?

I buy things I don’t need even without a pandemic hahh (i’m a huge retail therapy stan).

We have set up RGM New Zealand sharing your music with the uk scene and vice versa, what are your thoughts on the UK music scene?

That’s dope! There’s such a huge scene in the UK for music. I’d love to experience it one day – I think it’d be so cool to play shows there. I just need more UK fans HAHA

What useless party trick do you have?

Sneaking out of the party early to go home & watch The Office in bed 🙂

What was the most fun you have had on stage?

I recently had the opportunity to perform my own originals set and it was wicked! I’ve been performing with bands professionally for years from gigs around New Zealand to performing on cruise ships but I’ve never really done my own show with my own artist project, so this was a huge core memory for me. What made it even cooler is I had my own band made up of 5 of my dearest mates performing my songs with me. Was a huge blessing & I’m super hungry for more of it.

What was the worst experience on stage?

I once zoned out while performing and mid-song my brain just like forgot how to play the piano so I just froze up and couldn’t keep going…literally had to grab the mic and say to the audience “sorry guys, that’s all I’ve got.” I felt mortified hahahah

Tell us something about you that you think people would be surprised about?

I really love eating olives straight from the jar.

If you had to describe your music to an alien how would you describe it?

beep nooo büûh eëeæ bœøp

What makes you stand out as an artist?

Honestly I think a huge part of my artist individuality is my personality. I consider myself to be pretty quirky and kinda fun and that’s something I think I translate to my music and content around it pretty well. I like to think that musically, I hone in on some great melodies (I’m such a slave for a solid melodical hook) and this is something I think you’ll see really stand out in this next era of music to come from me.

Right now, what’s pissing you off the most?

This answer is probably predictable but covid can f*** off now – I’m so bored of it hahahah. Things started to pick up for live opportunities for me towards the end of last year and then New Zealand was shunned into like a 4 month lock down so unfortunately lost all of that. We came out of that lockdown in December but then we’ve still had the biggest restrictions over the country so the whole live music scene has been absolutely cur-stomped because of it. With it being two years on and this still being a huge struggle over here, I’m pretty ready for it to end (thankfully restrictions are being lifted soon).

What’s your favourite song to play live and why?

I recently did  a show and honestly my favourite song to perform was actually this new release ‘similar feeling’ ! I think because the song overall is quite vibey & mallow, that me and the band just rearranged it to make it kinda Pop funk and it went off. Moments like that are so cool.

I hear you have a new single, what can you tell us about it?

‘similar feeling’ is the result of a collaborative co-writing session with my good friend and New Zealand producer/songwriter Joel Jones. It’s a journey that dwells on the idea that we sometimes never truly move on, we just search for the comfort of a similar feeling in someone else.

Talk me through the thought process of the single?

Joel and I wrote this song pretty quickly – we spent a day at his studio expanding on the lyrical idea of finding that familiar feeling in someone else, while flipping the second half of the song into acknowledging that they too have found someone, a lot similar to you. It kind of paints a ‘two-sided’ scenario in the song. By adding in the cities ‘Colorado’ and ‘California’ gave the song the idea that we travel a lot and these places look different when we’re not with them. This is something I have personally experienced a lot with all the traveling I’ve done.

What was the recording process like?

It was dope – Joel is a machine to work with. I remember he just started building a track while I was in the room and I started humming a melody and throwing random words in the mix. One line we both instantly got hooked on was ‘I found a similar feeling in someone else’ and the song was just built around that.

What was the biggest learning curve in writing the single/album/ep?

I think this one taught me to literally go into the studio with zero expectations of what you’re going to leave with. I remember that day I went in kinda feeling like writing a sort of sad-ballad but then we created this track which feels more like something you could bop too while cooking dinner & drinking a glass of wine.

Would you change anything now its finished?

Not a single thing. I love it.

What are your plans for the year ahead?

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

RELEASE HEAPS OF MUSIC. I’ve been working with Joel a lot these last few months and we’ve created some art that I’m truly proud of and that has really captured my story and personality. My goal is to get most of it out this year!
