RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW NORWICH BAND BAG OF CANS

Hiya folks thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today, grab a brew and take a seat.

What made you decide to start the band?

George, the lead singer, threatened us all and we’ve not had the courage to stop him or fight back.

Introduce us to the members and your musical history?

We all met via the Norwich open mic scene, we think? Time has ravaged our brains.

Joe Wilson(Drums) – He was found on the side of the street as a baby in 2017, and aged remarkably quickly in a matter of months to a mid-20s human being with an enthusiasm for rhythm. We’re not sure how he’ll age as the future goes on but we choose to cherish the time we have with him, rather than worry about what may come to pass.

George Bryce (Vocals and Guitar) –Is only motivated by revenge.

George Baker (Lead Vocals and Trumpet) – We tried to get a straight answer out of him, but his reasons for starting all of this remain unknown and he’ll likely take them to the grave.

Sam Watts (Bass) – A local priest trying to make friends in a world which no longer understands him

Tom McGhie (Guitar) – No one’s quite sure what he was doing prior to 2017, but involved a large consumption of calcium which has impacted his joints in new and terrifying ways not previously thought possible

What’s one question you’re sick of being asked when interviewed?

“Are you or are you not planning a human sacrifice?” .. For the last time, Tom is alive and well. Please tell his family and the police to stop bothering us

Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories?

Tom McGhie has gout and has been hiding it from everyone for years.

Did you buy anything you don’t need in the pandemic?

SO. MUCH. FLOUR

What useless party trick do you have?

Joe Wilson can perfectly recreate the singing voice of James Blunt.

What was the most fun you have had on stage?

That time we had a very efficient soundcheck, which aided the gig running smoothly. Efficiency is joy.

What was the worst experience on stage?

That time where we mucked about and noodled in a soundcheck, adding a small element of stress to what could have been an efficient afternoon of gig preparation.

Tell us something about the band that you think people would be surprised about?

We’re all teetotal

If you had to describe your band/music to an alien how would you describe it?

I think we’d be a bit too preoccupied with the stress of interspecies communication and the philosophical connotations of an impossible task to do a good job….

There’d be a lot of sobbing though, we could guarantee that much.

What makes you stand out as a band?

How seriously we answer all questions.

Right now, what’s pissing you off the most?

This relentlessly nice weather we’ve been having.

What’s your favourite song to play live and why?

Hair of the Dog – George and Tom do some silly dance-moves with the vocal break at the end of each vocal line and it cracks us up

I hear you have a new single, what can you tell us about it?

Yep, it’s called Hair of the Dog, coming out 14th May. For a band called Bag of Cans it’s quite on brand, and we’re quite pleased with how gratuitously heavy handed the song title/band name combo is.

Talk me through the thought process of the single?

It started off as a silly song about hangover “cures”, and we were going to list things that did/didn’t work. We then thought it’d be funnier for the “cures” to get more ridiculous/more and more shameful as the song went on.

What was the recording process like?

Recording was great! We recorded it at the Crunch in North Norfolk, an old cold war bunker. It’s a really cool space and there are loads of musical trinkets around there that you can just pick up on the day and add in… such as the Hammond organ (which you can hear in the Choruses of the song!)

What was the biggest learning curve in writing the single?

Learning that the real song was the friends we met along the way.

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

We’d maybe change the rant section to be sliiiightly sillier. There are always little parts where you think “I could have played that note a little bit better”, but we’ve found if you spend too much time worrying about those bits and correcting them the song loses something. We’re not entirely sure what that thing is, but it does.

What are your plans for the year ahead?

Gig as far and wide as humanly possible. Get Tom to a doctor about his gout issues.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

There will be!
