Hiya Tony, AKA NUTRI3NT, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat.
Thanks for joining us today… Tell us bit about where you are from and how you got into music?
Well it has been a few months since we last sat down for a virtual coffee, so I guess by way of an update…
I am settled now in the new studio in Nottinghamshire and loving the peace of the countryside. I am continuing my journey in music that began in 89/90 when I started DJing and picked up gigs in chillout rooms during the rave scene. I always had an ear for downtempo since then.
What’s the live music scene like in the East Midlands, UK, right now? Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)?
I was blown away with the talent on BBC Introducing East Midlands when I tuned in to hear them spin my own track, this week. Great deep house remix of Holding On by Rules, with Gregory Porter of course. A track I used hammer! Some the indie stuff as well, blimey: Mumford & Son vibes from JERUB, Jude Forsey (some Editors vibes maybe there) were great.
Do you think its easy to become a victim of our surrounds sometimes?
I’ve not really had a problem. Growing up in Nottingham which was centre stage, second only to Manchester, during the House Music explosion of 88/89, moving to Cardiff and then witnessing it again, with a group of people that inspired Justin Kerrigan’s film Human Traffic! Living in London during the 90s superclub expansion. It was nuts at times. I guess I am much happier and more fulfilled with my countryside chill vibes!
Whats your favourite social media platform to use and why?
I can just about get my head around facebook but use it rarely. Although I do run Meta ads etc for some of my tracks. Expensive mind you!
We believe its essential to have a presence on Facebook, Instagram and X to introduce yourself to all the different types of audiences out there, what’s your thoughts on that?
Well yes it is. I need someone to manage that for me and pay the promo bills!
What’s your view on the Music industry today?
Fragmented and gigantic. It is quite overwhelming really. I think it is important to find a niche and stick to it. I have tried experimenting here and there with different genres, because I love the floaty feeling of artistic freedom, but the algorithms of the dark streaming overlords punish you for that.
Whats your thoughts on AI generated music?
I am not a fan of push a button and hey presto…here is your tune! I do use it as a starting point in mastering (iZotope Ozone), changing my voice so it doesn’t sound horrible, to demo tracks to singers (Audimee).
I dip in to the evil Suno, just for fun usually. It really is amazing tech but I hope they compensate all the artists they ripped. Sometimes, I will create something in that platform and then strip a vocal from the track and build a tune around that, but I will send it to a session singer as a base for a song/melody. I used AI once in a song and someone said “this sounds like AI” and so I don’t go there. Why bother when there are a lot of great singers on platforms like Fiverr?
Whats the biggest thing you have learned recently as you progress with your music?
Try to find your sound and stick to it for a bit.
What’s currently in your ears and on rotation at the moment?
My four year old daughter likes The Fate of Ophelia by Taylor Swift so that tends to be in my head. Great composition and song structure, as you would expect really!
What was your worst experience on stage? Any funny stories to share?
DJing on stage looking at the lights and levers, thinking I was landing a 747.
Got any fun, funny stories from life on the road?
Back stage party with Oasis in the 90s was surprisingly tame.
I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?
Yesss…the new track is called Losing You and it features Daniella Goldfine.
I had a German Shepherd called Diesel and he was amazing. A proper dog. Fetched slippers, followed me everywhere, slept next to me. He howled with wolves on YouTube and was obsessed with laser pointers.
He fell ill. We all thought it was kennel cough but his heart had grown so big, it failed. Losing You is a tribute to him really and to anyone else who has loved and lost.
What was the recording process like?
It is the first song that I have written and the first track where I have collaborated with a singer. Daniella is an amazing folk singer and I am so looking forward to experimenting with new music and working together again. I finished a rough mix of Losing You and sent it to her in Israel and she sent it back. It didn’t need any edits so just the one take really.
Would you change anything now it’s finished?
No…you have to draw a line and stick to it!
Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?
I have a new dog. She is a White Swiss Shepherd and just 9 months. She spent some time with Diesel so it’s comforting to think that he passed on some of his doggy skills.
