RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW PORTSMOUTH’S IVY EYE

Hiya folks thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today, grab a brew and take a seat.

What made you decide to start the band?

I think it was a mixture of desperate need/love to create and create music but also a mutual boredom throughout lockdown.

Introduce us to all the members and your musical history?

We are Ivy Eye, a producer duo from Portsmouth in the UK. We have Matty Benham on Vocals and Guitar, and Rory Sheppard on Bass. We both played in Heavy Metal bands initially and in college, when we met, we bonded over a mutual love for George Benson and Michael Jackson records.

What’s one question you’re sick of being asked when interviewed?

We’re not really sick of any questions, to be honest, we’d like more of the weird ones though for sure! I’m sure people would rather know ‘how many McDonald’s has Rory had in one day’ over ‘how did we meet’ or ‘our recording process of the song’

Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories?

That one about the Simpson predicting the future is a bit weird, isn’t it?

Did you buy anything you don’t need in the pandemic?

Matty bought a Nintendo 64? Did He need it? Absolutely not, did he want it? Absolutely. Does he regret it? Absolutely not.

What useless party trick do you have?

We love party tricks and would argue that all party tricks are 100% useful. Matty can fold his tongue into some sort of 3 leaf clover shape and Rory…well, go to a party with him and find out, that’s all we are going to say on that…

What was the most fun you have had on stage?

Our first-ever live show was such an experience, as it was our first show, we were unsure how the reception would be. However, the place was packed and the crowd were singing our songs back to us. I guess we couldn’t have asked for a better first show.

What was the worst experience on stage?

The same night was our favourite experience. During soundcheck, we had issues with some of our rig. Thought we were going to have to cancel. All worked out in the end though.

Tell us something about you / each member that you think people would be surprised about?

So Matty is an absolute Disney fanboy and Rory absolutely loves ABBA, to the point where he wants ‘ABBA GOLD’ tattooed across his knuckles.

If you had to describe your band/music to an alien how would you describe it?

‘Be warned alien, what you are about to hear will make you move in ways you didn’t know were possible. But it’s fine. It’s going to change your world’

What makes you stand out as a band?

We would say we that Ivy Eye as a concept is what makes us stand out. It’s an extension of us both, starting as heavy metal artists and also loving disco. The two couldn’t be anymore juxtaposed. Our visuals are quite different from what you’d expect from a disco project. We love the idea of someone seeing us without sound and not being able to tell we are disco and also the idea of someone hearing us on the radio, visiting our socials and being unsure whether they have come to the right profile. That excites us.

Right now, what’s pissing you off the most?

Pissing us off the most? On Call of Duty Warzone they keep getting rid of Rebirth Island and replacing it with shit maps. What’s that all about?

What’s your favourite song to play live and why?

Make My Way Out (To The Sun). It’s a weird one, whether people know it or not, the place erupts.

I hear you have a new single, what can you tell us about it?

The song is called ‘On My Mind’ The song’s narrative depicts an inner narration of the moment when you feel an instant connection with someone on a dancefloor. Someone you have never met before and from that moment, nothing but that moment is on your mind.

Talk me through the thought process of the single?

The thought process of the song was exploring our love for classic house/French house records. We are hugely influenced by artists like Daft Punk, Stardust, Moloko, Modjo. So we wanted to explore that house sound with our signature disco feel.

What was the recording process like? 😂

The recording process was different this time as we have our own recording space now. Which allowed us to be in the same room rather than our previous release that was done over FaceTime.

What was the biggest learning curve in writing the single?

The biggest learning curve for us is learning when to stop and when to stop overthinking every element. Otherwise, we will be forever tweaking and changing elements.

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

No there isn’t really, this is how we intended the single to sound and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

We are dropping a music video for this release on Thursday at 7pm. We have our first headline show coming up on the 6th of August in our Hometown which we are super excited about and also Victorious Festival with headliners like Sam Fender and Stereophonics which, again, we are stoked about. For the rest of the year expect a lot more of Ivy Eye. Music, Music Videos and Live Shows
