POWERS OF THE MONK

RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW POWERS OF THE MONK WHAT HAPPENED?

Hiya Powers of the Monk, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today, grab a brew and take a seat.

What made you decide that music is a thing for you?

I think that sort of bubbles up in certain people and creates this lifelong desire to make music. Is there a “Music Gene” ??

Introduce us to you all and your musical history.

Powers of the Monk has always been a two person project. Myself, David (guitars/vocals) and CasSondra (violin/vocals). We started in 2004, made a couple of CD’s and then took a break for 10 years. We started up again during COVID and started working with producer Dani Macchi. We have released 3 singles with him so far.

What’s the live music scene like in Detroit right now?

Always very loaded with many great artists. Anyone we should be looking out for? Infinite River, is a band I like.

I’ve seen a lot of people struggling for support recently online. What’s your view on the industry?

It’s sort of a new world in music now. Tons of music out there, making for a lot of competition. Hopefully the cream rises to the top.

What are your thoughts on the new Co-op arena?

Lots of problems but it’s open now! Would love to play there… but we are probably not invited. Oh well…maybe later.

Where do you feel you currently sit within the music industry?

Even though we’ve been doing music for a long time, our latest project with a new producer, Dani Macchi, makes it feel like we started all over again with a new energy.

POWERS OF THE MONK

Tell us Two truths and a lie about you. Truth one:

We are old ! Truth two: We are dinosaurs ! Lie: We are too ancient to make music….Not dead yet !

Do you ever worry about people taking things the wrong way or cancel culture? Discuss….

If you think about it, some people have been attempting to cancel other groups they don’t like forever. We just never called it that before. I think the same things matter today as they always have. If you respect all  people and treat them fairly, you will get that in return and we will all be better off. Unfortunately, evil and hate will always be something to challenge us.

Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories? If not, why not? No.

We’re not really like that. If you live by logic and reason in the real world and make judgements based on real facts and evidence, you can’t fall into that world. Too much paranoia is usually self-destructive.

What was your best experience on stage?

If everything is going well, the audience will respond in a way that is very noticeable and that always brings happiness to the performer.

What was your worst experience on stage?

It’s always bad if technical problems diminish the performance. It happens to everyone at some point.

Tell us something about you and CasSondra, that you think people would be surprised about.

I have a German Shepard named Nora and like to work on cars and CasSondra does all our artwork and loves cats.

What are the next steps you plan to take as a band to reach the next level?

We are working on a cover of Charles Sheffield’s, Voodoo Workin’ and a song called, Icarus, that will be released in the summer. We really don’t care much about reaching levels. We just want to make the best music we can and let the chips fall where they may. Everything beyond making good songs is a bonus. It’s all good.

I hear you have new music, what can you tell us about it?

The new single is called, Puffy Head (with bird legs). It’s a lighthearted diary of adventures in space from an astronaut point of view.

What was the recording process like?

Recording is always a challenge to get everything in your head onto a sound recording. It’s very rewarding if you can actually do that.

What was the biggest learning curve in writing the new tunes?

Working with an outside producer was a new experience for us and took a little time to adjust to.

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

No. If you make your changes during the recording process, the resulting song should be more or less what you wanted, which is what happened to us with this song.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

We are all in this together. Let’s try to be nice to each other.
