RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW PROKLAIM

Hiya Proklaim, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat.

What made you decide that music is a thing for you?

It stems purely from an urge to express myself that gradually increased and using the outlet of putting words to beat gave me a sense of purpose and satisfaction.

Introduce us to you all and your musical history.

I go by the name of Proklaim and started dabbling in making songs in 2011. It’s been a journey of growth and exploration and I thor enjoy it.

What’s the live music scene like in Windhoek right now?

It’s not as bubbling as say a decade ago and names that come to mind that made this small city’s spoken word and live music scene were Sheshani and Black vulkanite.

Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)? Sheshani is a great vocalist and guitar player she’s based in Netherlands now if I’m not mistaken.

I’ve seen a lot of people struggling for support recently online. What’s your view on the industry?

The industry seems to have changed a bit with less barriers to entry and more opportunities for entrepreneurial musicians to create content and put themselves out there. I too do believe forums and tools are becoming more available for people to get their music heard and even used by tv and sports companies. It’s more like the Wild West it has its pros and cons.

PROKLAIM

Where do you feel you currently sit within the music industry?

I see myself as a voice and believe that potent music and particularly hiphop that is a vector of meaningful potent messages with style is needed in the culture. I also believe great music if it’s electrifying can propel itself organically.

Tell us two truths and a lie about you.

I write music daily out of passion and habit.
I like to workout.
I play the piano.

Do you ever worry about people taking things the wrong way or cancel culture? Discuss….

I don’t really pay mind to cancel culture and believe it’s actually a deterrent to progress and truth being propelled forward. What I too do note is so much has shifted in recent years and what was called one thing in recent years might be declared another these days.

Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories? If not, why not?

Maybe Dr Sebi was indeed killed (can’t swear I know) But what he spoke about health and herbs was spot on…YouTube him

What was your best experience on stage?

Performing with buddies Drafted to Babylon when they released their album was a great learning experience

What was your worst experience on stage?

Tell us something about you / each member that you think people would be surprised about.
I like old TNT classic movies from the 40s and 60s

What are the next steps you plan to take as a band to reach the next level?

Be prolific and generate quality content exponentially kind of like Tupac in his life ensuring there’s always great music in bulk.

I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?

It’s varied it’s colourful it’s lyrical it’s soulful. I try not limit myself to a specific style of beat and sonic approach.

What was the recording process like?

Get beat that excites my ears and write to it then lay vocals. Hooks I usually just freestyle

What was the biggest learning curve in writing the new tunes?

Writing is the key to all music all genres with vocals are basically words put to a tempo or some variation of that basic format. So the key is getting words that connect as they are the primary tool to convey.

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

I nevr do that. It’s been the key to my growth.. move to next joint and learn as you go.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

Truth ain’t relative
