Hiya Jack of Sea Breeze, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat.
Tell us about Sea Breeze!
We’re a three-piece genre-bending psych-rock band from Manchester! The band was started by myself on bass and Joel Eastwood on guitar in 2022, with Ivan Renac joining in 2024 on drums.
The band started when myself and Joel went on holiday to Portugal, heavily obsessed with Khruangbin and stayed in an apartment named ‘The Sea Breeze,’ and it grew from there!
What was your musical career pre-Sea Breeze?
Myself and Joel were in a rock band together called Torn from the ages of 13 to around 18, playing venues like Manchester Academy, Town Hall, Band on the Wall and others. Footage of us playing is still on YouTube so it’s nice to watch every now and then. The band broke up because we were all going on different paths, I went to university, our bassist became a priest, y’know, the usual…
What was your first gig as Sea Breeze?
Our first gig was sold-out supporting Yin Yin at The White Hotel, it was an incredible experience, the chaps were very supportive and they couldn’t believe that it was our first gig!
What’s the live music scene like in Manchester right now? Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)?
I think the Manchester music scene is booming as usual, for psych-rock in particular it’s very good, with Manchester Psych Fest every year, Sour Grapes do a lot for the psych scene and Big Hands have psych jam sessions. Will have to give a shoutout to False Indigo, Slow Loris and Flat Moon doing incredible things at the minute!
What was your best experience on stage?
For me, it has to be when we played the Berwick Food & Beer Festival last year. It was the first time I saw people I didn’t know properly dancing to music we wrote, it was such an amazing feeling!
I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?
Our new single, Nighthawks, is the first single of our upcoming album called UNTITLED., which is an album based on the beautiful world of art! The songs name derives from the famous Edward Hopper painting. It’s quite the funky upbeat psych number! It’s also the first song that we have released which has vocals on, as our first album was instrumental.
Since the album is about art, our resident designer Iona Purvis aka @studio_____orange has painted all of our artwork!
What was the recording process like?
Quite smooth! We’re very lucky to have a circle of friends that are all musically inclined, so our friend who goes under the pseudonym, John Barleycorn, helped us record everything over a period for a few weeks and we’re very grateful for his help.
What was the biggest learning curve in writing the new tunes?
When we were writing album 1, we never jammed the tunes together, it was just written, recorded and released by myself and Joel. But after we wrote album 2, we have played the new songs live many times before recording, so it’s helped us fine-tune the tracks.
Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?
Thank you for reading! Hope you like our new song, love to all x
