SEAN KENNEDY

RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW SEAN KENNEDY

Hiya Sean, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat.

Hi! Thank you for having me back.

What was life like for you before you got into music?

I started making music so early on in my life that there wasn’t really a time before music. I started writing songs at 9, and I’m 21 now, so I’ve been making music for more than half my life.

It seems like being a social media curator has become added to the many jobs of a musician, how do you feel about this?

I grew up with social media, so it seemed like a natural integration with my music. I’m not into posting a crazy amount, but I really like curating visuals to share alongside the music.

How do you manage engagement on your socials?

It’s been hard to find a balance, because I sometimes feel like I’m bombarding people with posts. I try to share the aspects of music that people find the most interesting: cool visuals, behind the scenes, etc.

Where do you feel you currently sit within the music industry?

My view of the industry has really changed within the last year. I’m signed to a label now, and having a team behind me has definitely made me feel more like a part of the industry. There are so many amazing independent artists who have built strong circles around them. But coming from releasing music entirely on my own in high school, having the support from a label has made everything feel more real.

What’s the biggest thing you have learned recently as you progress with your music?

I think I’ve learned to stick to my gut and just make the songs I want to make. My biggest song to date is a track that you’d never expect to be big. It’s slow and stripped back. I put it out just because I loved it, and people really responded.

Tell us something about you that you think people would be surprised about.

I think people would be surprised to know that my family has helped with so much of my music. My brother, Cole, has worked on almost all of my music videos, and he’s shot a lot of my artwork. My mom has dressed me for almost all of my photoshoots. They’ve been so incredibly helpful, and I’m so grateful for everything they do.

I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?

Yes! My new song is called “Insane”, and it’s the lead single from my first album with my label. It’s a song about self-evaluation, but it’s got a bit of a lighthearted layer–it’s me poking fun at myself.

What was the recording process like?

I recorded a demo for the song in my dorm on campus. It was super rough, but then when I went home, I fleshed it out. Adam Accetta, who’s a family friend, recorded drums on it. It was really cool to see it transform bit by bit from the demo to the final track.

What was the biggest learning curve in writing the new tunes?

I have so many different ideas and directions I want to go in, and my mind changes quite often. When I got signed last year, I really wanted to make full-on pop music. I made probably enough tracks to fill an album. Then by the time my label green-lit a record, I decided I wanted to make a rock album. So it’s been hard to stay consistent enough to make a cohesive album.

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

I don’t think so! I spent quite a lot of time working on this track, and I’m really really proud of it.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

Keep your eyes peeled throughout the next few months! There’s so much coming, and I’m so excited to share it!
