SENTIENCE MACHINE

RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW SENTIENCE MACHINE

Introduce us to you all and your musical history

Psibindi: I began my music journey at 11, recording my first song at my uncle’s studio. Soon after, I worked with renowned producers like Andy Whitmore (Peter Andre, Eternal) and recorded my debut single, My Feelings Are Just Right.

With my dad as my manager, we chased record deals with majors, but as a 13-year-old Asian girl, the industry wasn’t ready to back me. So, my dad started a label, and we released the record independently in the ’90s.

I’ve been fighting that battle ever since, and now, I’ve fully embraced life as an independent artist.

Jamie: I started playing the drums at the age of 6, growing up performing in church and rock bands as a teenager. My passion for music led me to study music further, playing in big bands and rock gigs with friends on the weekends.

In 2013, I moved to London to continue my music studies, and since graduating, I’ve been making a living off music.

Psibindi: What’s the live music scene like in London right now? Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)? The live music scene was hit hard by Covid, with many venues closing and making it more challenging for live music to thrive. As a promoter, I understand the struggle for venues to break even, especially with rising business rates. That’s why it’s crucial for music lovers to attend live events, support both the venues and artists, because this is the ecosystem that keeps the music industry alive.

I’ve seen a lot of people struggling for support recently online. What’s your view on the industry?

Jamie: The industry is what you make of it, live music is making a comeback and people are hungry for authentic entertainment and good music.

Do you ever worry about people taking things the wrong way or cancel culture?

Psibindi: Our music is provocative because we boldly confront social issues. We released Microscopic Enemy in October 2021, in the wake of Covid. The track explores the stark contrast between those who suffered financial loss and those, particularly in tech, who profited immensely. It also touches on the vaccine. The lyrics sparked debate, resonating deeply with some while dividing opinion among others, which is exactly what we wanted to achieve.

What was your best experience on stage?

Psibindi: We’ve played some incredible gigs, especially at Water Rats, Camden Assembly, and The Craufurd Arms during our UK tour last year. We thrive on the energy of a stage brought to life with great lighting and sound, but nothing beats an audience that’s fully immersed in our show!

Tell us something about you that you think people would be surprised about.

Psibindi: I’m half Indian and Pakistani, trained in classical Indian singing, and also a psytrance DJ! My music has been supported by industry icons DJ Nina Kraviz and DJ Jaguar (BBC Radio 1). I founded Psy-Sisters, a global arts collective and platform dedicated to empowering women and non-binary DJs.

Ed: I’m a successful music producer with over 10 years of experience publishing through Warner Chappell. My music has been featured in Hollywood films, and I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with award-winning Eurovision finalists from Malta. I’ve also had the honor of opening for the legendary Anastasia and other rock bands.

Jamie: I’m a jazzer and I play rock!

What are the next steps you plan to take as a band to reach the next level?

Psibindi: Our goal is to release our debut album and tour festivals worldwide. We aim to expand our reach and amplify the messages behind each of our songs.

I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?

Psibindi: I wrote the lyrics for Human Stigma in the aftermath of Brexit, deeply troubled by the division it created and the negative portrayal of immigration by populists. This song is my response, a call to embrace diversity and celebrate our shared humanity. It serves as a reminder that, no matter where we come from, we all face the same struggles, challenges, and hopes.
