RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW SHAYA RITCHIE

What made you decide to start the band / become a soloist?

Ever since I could talk, I was fascinated with singing! I was always surrounded by different musical genres and cultures which has really influenced my choice of music today, especially because of my family who are all heavily into music. I fell in love with the sound of music as soon as I could appreciate the different harmonies and melodies, and started to write my own songs and singing covers at a very young age.

Introduce us to your musical history?

I would say I am at the beginning of my music journey, but have released 3 songs in total  including my latest release, Hurt No More. I love to perform live on stage and have had the pleasure to perform abroad as well! I have always enjoyed the Soul and R&B scene from the 90s and 00s, and I would say that my biggest influences include Toni Braxton, Alicia Keys, Ella Mai, Jorja Smith and Sabrina Claudio just to name a few. I find that these powerful artists have powerful voices and really paved the way for others.

What’s one question you’re sick of being asked when interviewed?

That is a difficult question! I actually can not think of any!

Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories?

I can’t say I have!

What useless party trick do you have?

Telling a bad joke? haha

What was the most fun you have had on stage?

Performing at a very cute and friendly bar in Lisbon! The audience was so warm and appreciative, and just ended up singing for the majority of the night!

What was the worst experience on stage?

None! (yet…)

Tell us something about you that you think people would be surprised about?

I got married last year after my wedding got cancelled twice in 2020 due to the Pandemic!

If you had to describe your music to an alien how would you describe it?

My songs represent all the emotions of a human

What makes you stand out as an artist?

That is a difficult one given the increasing talent in the industry as a whole. But I would say my original yet niche sound of 90’s and 00’s R&B and Soul (so I’ve been told). I am trying to focus on helping to bring that sound back!

Right now, what’s pissing you off the most? (Can’t say the virus )

That is another difficult one! I think the Tinder Swindler – that was intense!

What’s your favourite song to play live and why?

Right now I would definitely say Hurt No More given how natural the song feels to me, and because I love communicating deep and meaningful topics to my listeners.

I hear you have a new single/album/ep, what can you tell us about it?

Thats right! Its called Hurt No More, which is a chill R&B song with a current and modern twist. With this track, I want my listeners to know that there is a limit to the pain and suffering caused by hurtful relationships and deceit, and that experiences and stories like this do exist for others to relate to. I hope that when people listen to my music, they will feel connected to it in some way and know that they are not alone when experiencing situations like these.

Talk me through the thought process of the single?

A lot of effort and time was put in for the track, and I always try to share my own experiences and situations others can relate to in my music. When I first listened to the instrumental, I naturally felt that it would suit deep and meaningful lyrics reflecting hurt and pain caused by Love. I must say that the whole process came together quite well and worked naturally in the studio!

What was the recording process like?

It was actually a really calm and enjoyable experience, because I think I clicked with the instrumental straight away and began to pen down the lyrics quite naturally. This definitely helped smooth out the recording process.

What was the biggest learning curve in writing the single?

To really take your time and not rush the process!

Would you change anything now that it’s finished?

Nothing at all! The single is exactly how I wanted it to sound after a few different mixes.

What are your plans for the year ahead?

I want to focus on creating an EP as a start, by releasing a few more songs and creating more awareness of my music with the hope that I can connect with more listeners! I also hope to secure a few more live gigs given that more restrictions have been lifted, as I really feel that singing live is one of the best ways to communicate your songs plus it’s an enjoyable experience!

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

Mainly a huge thank you to everyone taking the time to read this interview, and hopefully there will be more music to come this year!
