RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW SPOOK MUZIEK WHAT HAPPENED

What made you decide that music is a thing for you?

I know the exact moment. I was in a record shop and they were playing the most amazing music.  I ran to the counter and asked what it was. It was Wet Wet Wet’s 1995 album ‘Picture This’. That was December of 2022 and I’ve not looked back since.

Introduce us to you and your musical history.

There simply was none pre-December 2022.  Since then, I have discovered many other exciting artists on the scene; Enrique Iglesias, Robbie Williams,   Creed to name a few.  They all really inspired me to be whoever I wanted to be. A pop star. A rock star. A rap star. A jazz star. A dance star. Whatever really.

What’s the live music scene like in Sheffield right now? Anyone we should be looking out for (Bar you of course)

The Sheffield music scene is absolutely thriving at the moment.  You’ve got the likes of David Essex and Jane McDonald coming to the City Hall, Simply Red coming to Sheffield Arena… need I say more?

I’ve seen a lot of people struggling for support recently online. What’s your view on the industry?

It’s tough out there. I like to share a lot of Instagram reels as I feel it’s how music was traditionally digested. Screw TikTok etc. It takes around 60-90 minutes to make a reel and sometimes they’ll get 2 likes and it’s really disheartening, but then another reel will get 10 or 11 likes, and you remember why you were doing all this in the first place.

Where do you feel you currently sit within the music industry?

I’d probably say roughly level with The Calling. I like to set myself small, achievable goals, and the next act I’m looking to overtake is Orson.

Tell us two truths and a lie about you.

Ohh, I’m so rubbish at these!  Ok.. I have a beard, I live in England, and I have a doctorate in animal-husbandry.

Do you ever worry about people taking things the wrong way or cancel culture? Discuss….

I wrote some very risqué Tweets back in 2013 and I’m struggling to delete them, so yes it is keeping me up at night.

Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories? If not why not?

I do think that Last Dinner Party are industry plants.  And Wet Leg. And Clairo. And Billie Eilish. And Picture Parlour. Almost women in music are, probably.

What was your best experience on stage?

At my second show, I nearly tripped over a drum kit but managed to stay on my feet.

What was your worst experience on stage?

At my third show, I did actually trip over a drum kit. I was rushed to A&E and thankfully the staff there recognised me and let me jump the queue.

Tell us something about you that you think people would be surprised about.

I’ve got the full lyric to Staind’s “It’s Been a While” tattooed all down my back. I am actually going through the courts with the tattooist at the moment as he didn’t put an asterisk in the swear word from the chorus like I asked which means there are certain live shows where I’m unable to play with my top off.

What are the next steps you plan to take as an artist to reach the next level?

I keep reaching out to Molly Mae and Dapper Laughs to see if she can share one of my reels, or even be in one, but alas they will not.

I hear you have a new music, what can you tell us about it.

Oh yeah, who told you that? lol!!  I’ve made an EP with my long-term lover and fierce rival JMS. We put our differences aside and made 3 track that form the EP. I’ve not spoken to her since she laid down the final verse on the final chorus, but I know that, like me, she is incredibly proud of the music we’ve made.  Our goal is for at least 51% of the world to hear it by Q2 of 2025.

What was the recording process like?

You probably won’t believe me, but we both have no recollection!  This is not down to drink or drugs, but just having a poor memory I expect.

What was the biggest learning curve in writing the new tunes?

I am a very good producer, there was one particular chorus that I couldn’t get to sound right.  However, I did then learn about something called “panning”. Let me tell you, that took some learning!  But I’m happy I discovered it, and I recommend it to any producers out there.

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

To be honest, there is so much I would change about it but it’s too late now.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

No
