RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW SPÜNDAY

What made you decide that music is a thing for you?

‘If something burns your soul with purpose and desire, it’s your duty to be reduced to ashes by it. Any other form of existence will be yet another dull book in the library of life.’

Charles Bukowski.

I’m only following orders. It’s all-consuming. I have the ability to write songs and record them, it’s my duty to get them out there. Non-negotiable.

Introduce us to the band.

Paul, vox, guitar. Daf, bass. Matthew, drums. My favourite band is The Fall, Daf likes Allan Holdsworth and Matthew is Italian. It’s an unusual mix of tastes but if it’s coralled correctly it works.

The music industry?

It’s where art and culture meet the money men. It’s where it all goes wrong. A place where an artist’s ideas, dreams, and hopes will slowly but surely become so twisted and bent out of shape as to be unrecognisable. Is there another industry in the world that treats its source material with such disdain? It’s the subject of our current release.

How has your songwriting developed?

I have reached a point where my songwriting antennae are operating at full power. It’s more difficult not to write a song than write one. It takes a while to learn that, you’ve got to write a lot of shit to get there.

Listening to new music?

Dandelion radio is great. Truly capturing the essence of what  a John Peel show was all about which was eclecticism and a genuine passion for new music.

What are your thoughts on Spotify?

Another example of the industry’s contempt for artists. A curate’s egg if ever there was one.

Do you sign up for any conspiracy theories?

The great thing about the internet is that anyone can go on there and the worst thing about the internet is that anyone can go on there. Some people have too much time on their hands.

Women not feeling safe at gigs?

I’m acutely aware of this as my daughter is in a band. This macho bullshit has always been there. Bring back National Service?

What makes you stand out as an artist?

Our sonic capabilities make us stand out. We sound like no one and no one sounds like us. A wall of sound is an ‘oft overused phrase but with us it’s actually true.

Tell us something about each member you might be surprised about.

I’ve got an African land snail as a pet, Daf’s favorite guitarist is Allan Holdsworth and Matthew is a distant relative of Mussolini.

New song release.

The song is called While my guitar gently beeps. It’s about record companies’ constant reissues, remixes, remasters. At the expense of new music coming through. It’s about rock star memorabilia, guitars being snapped up by billionaires and then put in glass cases so that you can’t even touch it let alone play it. An absurd situation. It’s about ‘golden oldie’ rock radio stations playing the same stuff you’ve heard a thousand times which makes me wonder what these stations will be playing in 30 years time? Music from 60 years ago? It’s actively in opposition to anyone or anything coming though with a new sound or idea. ‘Give hard rock to the bald, tell ’em SpünDay called.’ Let’s move on from this formatted, dull musical template and create a 21st century approach to music where anything goes and the artist is respected and trusted.

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

No, it sounds exactly how I envisioned it to be.

Paul.
