RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW SYLL

Thanks for joining us today… Tell us a bit about where you are from and how you got into music?

I was born in Hulme, Manchester but grew up mainly in Moss Side and now live in Whalley Range which are all within a couple of miles of each other. I got into music when me and my cousin,Leon and a friend called Kevin formed a rap group called WSK. I got into music production mainly because the guy who was producing for us at the time took so much time in his process that I decided I had to learn how to do it myself.

What’s the live music scene like in Manchester right now?

The last concert I went to was the Wu Tang Clan at the Co-op with my daughter. I don’t know that much about the live scene in Manchester but if something interesting comes up I am willing to take a look. My daughters both go to quite a few concerts although mainly well known acts, not so much the local scene

Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you of course)

I recently came across a young female rapper called Meduula who i think is from Manchester. I found out she has been around for a while. She is a promising talent

Do you think its easy to become a victim of our surrounds sometimes?

Growing up where i did i could have easily ended up getting involved in some dodgy activity, but that can be said for most urban inner city areas. I and many of my friends chose not to although we had to deal with the stereotypes that exist within the general media about these places i.e Moss Side is a prime example

What are your ambitions for the band?

My ambition is just to put good music out. I feel a real sense of accomplishment doing that. Anything on top of that is a welcome bonus

Whats your favourite social media platform to use and why?

I am generally on Facebook but i do go on Instagram and TikTok. I use them all to promote my music and they all have pros and cons

We believe its essential to have a presence on Facebook, Instagram and X to introduce yourself to all the different types of audiences out there, what’s your thoughts on that?

I agree they can all be a great way of connecting with and finding new fans although i find i use X less as i don’t like the direction it has taken more recently

What’s your view on the Music industry today?

I have heard a few horror stories told to me by friends about the industry, mainly contractual, getting ripped off by labels, managers etc. Me personally i love the way i can bypass a lot of the annoyances that existed back in the day and get my music out. I do my own artwork and i have a distributor and that works for me. On the other hand it means there is so much competition for the ears of the public because anyone can follow this path

Whats your thoughts on AI generated music?

Not a fan but we have to come to terms with the fact it isn’t going to disappear. I just hope that the industry can find a way to regulate its use. I was really disappointed when the music producer Timbaland gave his approval to Suno, an Ai music generation platform because it gave them a credibility they don’t deserve

Whats the biggest thing you have learned recently as you progress with your music?

Promotion and engagement are so hit and miss on all social media platforms

What’s currently in your ears and on rotation at the moment?

There is no one artist i am listening to as i tend to see who comes up on youtube and just listen randomly. I recently listened to the new Gorillaz track with Tom Waits which i liked as well as the latest J Cole and Dave albums

What was your worst experience on stage? Any funny stories to share?

When i forgot my lyrics and had to mumble for 4 bars before i remembered the rest of the song

Got any fun, funny stories from life on the road?

One memory I have is after hearing the legendary stories of musicians doing all kinds of drugs backstage I thought it was an exaggerated myth until I saw for myself. I was just shocked at the sight of people doing it so openly

I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?

Yes my track is called For the better. It is about growing apart from friends because you have different ambitions and sometimes to achieve them you have to make tough decisions that leave them behind

What was the recording process like?

The recording process never really changes. I produce the music then write the lyrics, then i send it to Aniff Akinola who sometimes does some additional production as well as mixing and mastering

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

There are are a few songs i have released where i wish i said certain things or delivered them a different way but in general i am happy with this release

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

Yes the plan is to release a song a month as well as EPs so if you like what i do stay tuned. Thanks
