RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW THAIN

Hiya Thain, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat.

What was your life like before you got into music?

Skateboarding was my major hobby before I picked up a mic. I spent many years doing it and earned many injuries that my body thanks me for now.

What’s the live music scene like in Wichita, KS right now? Anyone we should be looking out for?

It’s pretty refreshing actually, after doing some travelling. We’ve got a scene that seems to have a place for all genres of sound. Nest Records has a finger on the pulse, but there’s a ton of talented rappers and bands alike in our area. Shout out to Action Approved Studios getting their start, and Humble Greatness has been doing their thing for a while.

It seems like being a social media curator has become added to the many jobs of a musician; how do you feel about this?

The cream rises to the top or whatever they say. Those that work hard and adjust to the changing times will always be successful at what they do. Talent is in their somewhere too.

How do you manage engagement on your socials?

I try to maintain a presence with consistent posting across all our platforms. It’s a JOB like stated above. I’d rather be creating tbh.

What’s your view on the music industry today?

Only the strong survive. I’ve known so many talented people that got discouraged along the way. You’ve got to really want it, I mean like total commitment.

Where do you feel you currently sit within the music industry?

We’ve got a great foothold within the region, but there’s a ton of work to be done! I guess I’m still largely considered an underground rapper.

What’s the biggest thing you have learned recently as you progress with your music?

Never stop learning. Failures come often, so learn from them and adjust your techniques.

What was your best experience on stage?

Probably River Fest back in June – played as direct support for Flo Rida at my city’s largest music festival. Probably 20,000 people were in attendance!

What was your worst experience on stage?

Hard to peg, but it was probably some small town I drove way too far to and played for their staff and other musicians on the bill.

Tell us something about you that you think people would be surprised about.

I’m also a vocalist for a rock band ‘For the Birds’

What can you tell us about your new track?

Me and Hippy whipped it up from start to finish in a few hours, with the help of Steven Shields from Audio Paradolia who did the heavy lifting on production, engineering, recording. We had Tony Lee from Nest Records sit in on the final mix – he’s credited with some production work on this track as well.

What was the recording process like?

The three of us (Hippy K, Steven, myself) met up and set out to make a track that had an energetic vibe and was different from what most of our independent catalogs consist of. Steven took out the bass guitar, and electric guitar, and we were off to the races.

What was the biggest learning curve in writing the new tunes?

Sitting down and actually doing it. I feel like the result is almost always favorable, but it’s a drag sometimes clearing yourself of the distractions and doing it.

Would you change anything now that it’s finished?

I find myself wishing it was longer! But maybe that’s a good thing.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

Leave the world a better place than you found it! Thanks to anyone that has given my music a chance. We’re nothing without the fans!
