RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW THE AMAZING ALEX FRANCIS
Hi Alex mate, thanks for joining us today. What made you decide to start to become a soloist?
After I came back from studying music in Brighton I made my mind up about leading all of my creative work in music with me at “the front”, even though I have a super close community of musicians who are with me all the time.
Introduce us to you and your musical history?
I am Alex Francis, a singer and songwriter based in Hackney, London. I have been releasing original music since 2017 and to date, I have toured my music all over the UK, Europe and also in the USA. My new single “If I Can’t Have You” came out Friday, June 10th.
I’m going straight into a meaty question, Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories?
Nothing that I’m truly in sync with but I do find the idea of “how the pyramids were actually built” pretty mind-boggling
Did you buy anything you don’t need in the pandemic?
A hot tub. I can’t admit to it being a “need”, but there are definitely days when it feels like it
What useless party trick do you have?
A pretty spot-on Moonwalk, I need the right shoes and floor, however.
What was the most fun you have had on stage?
I’ve had a few, but it’s out of two – either playing to a sold out Paris L’Olympia with my band supporting Stereophonics on tour, or opening for my brother at London Palladium in 2019.
What was the worst experience on stage?
Probably any gig where I have snapped either the D or G string on my acoustic guitar – if you know you know – you’re absolutely knackered if that happens.
Tell us something about you that you think people would be surprised about?
Not sure how surprising this might be, but I am a very tidy person…I think having a nearly two-year-old has probably enhanced my abilities there.
If you had to describe your music to an alien how would you describe it?
Honest expression from the heart, and the soul hopefully destined for you as well.
What makes you stand out as an artist?
Hopefully the fact that I’m not willing to manufacture myself in order to reach dizzy heights. I have to be true to what makes me love music the most, and that is my honest expressions, not those that are the latest thing.
Right now, what’s pissing you off the most?
The supreme court and the war in Ukraine.
What’s your favourite song to play live and why?
I really enjoy playing my song “Desire” live, as I sometimes take it off in different directions playing around with the music and the melodies within it. But right now, I’ve found a great way to get my new single “If I Can’t Have You” over live and I’m loving getting to know playing that.
I hear you have a new single, what can you tell us about it?
“If I Can’t Have You” is my first release of the year and it’s a unique one for me because it was written entirely on ZOOM..we had to jump through a few technical hoops to get it finished!
Talk me through the thought process of the single?
It’s a bit of a love letter to the idea that these last years have reminded so many of us that we probably take for granted some of those most close to us, and how important it is to stay close to those you love.
What was the recording process like?
We’re having a lot of fun piecing new songs together in the studio again. Not having access to my favoured processes was definitely a hindrance through the height of the pandemic, even though I learned some important creative skills moving forward, so I’m really relishing being back in the studio with my favourite musicians bringing songs to life. We had a demo for the new single without too much on it, so the way we found our route to its finished product was exciting and stimulating.
What was the biggest learning curve in writing the single?
Definitely persevering working on ZOOM! It could have been really easy to shelve the song and choose to revisit it when we could get together again, but we managed to honour our work ethic and get it done even with connection speeds as hazards..
Would you change anything now it is finished?
I don’t think so, it feels like a strong illustration of the sound moving forward and I have great faith in the way we are working.
What are your plans for the year ahead?
More new music! More singles, potentially an EP and headline shows in the UK..lots to come, lots to announce. I’m pretty bloody excited!
Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?
Only that if you haven’t heard the new single yet, then I would love to know what you think of it and that if you like it – tell your neighbour!
