RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW THE BIGGER PICTURE

What made you decide to start the band?

I think that in different ways, for all of us, it was never really much of a “choice”, it’s like we received a sort of “call” or something, it’s hard to explain! Me personally from the moment I first heard the records that my parents had when I was a kid, I said to myself “okay this is what I have to do, now I know”. The more I grew up the more this feeling intensified and by the time I became a teenager I knew that all I wanted was to share my feelings with the world through music but also that I didn’t want to do it alone. Having a band gives you the chance to share this whole process with people that are exactly like you, and that is the start an engine that suddenly turns everything into something that’s more complex in a very positive way, it gets more “advanced” as now it’s five people, not just one channeling all their energies into one single thing. It makes the whole thing more powerful and I can say that’s part of the concept of our name as well!

Introduce us to the members and your musical history?

We very recently underwent a sort of big change in the lineup with three of us leaving the band, Me (Jimmy) and Paolo are currently the only official members of this project but we’ll be back at our original number soon.
We both started playing guitar around the same age, 12/13, and from that moment the path was very clear in front of us; we either started or joined different musical projects throughout the years while we grew up in Italy then around eight years ago we moved to London, met each other, went to music uni, got a degree and eventually got together as a band!

What’s one question you’re sick of being asked when interviewed?

We haven’t had many interviews before this one as we have only released our first song around March last year (2021) so I wouldn’t feel like ‘ruling out’ any particular question yet, maybe we’ll have a chance to answer some more questions in the future with you and I promise at that time I’ll let you know! (laugh)

Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories?

We should first establish what do we mean by “conspiracy theory” because we both have many thoughts and feelings that might differ (or not) from what we could describe as “the common ideas shared by the vast majority of the world”, does that turn them into conspiracy theories though? Who knows!

What useless party trick do you have?

Being able to create a queue of songs so long that will only end a day after the party, can that be considered a trick? It is ‘performed’ at a party though so it might count! Using pre-existing playlists is often too easy!

What was the most fun you have had on stage?

I think whenever we look at each other on stage, feeling the energy that each of us is just remarkably spreading and generating around ourselves in that specific moment, that carries us away almost into another dimension and that feeling is just pricelessly amazing and consequently also fun as **!!

What was the worst experience on stage?

I once played a whole song with my low E string completely out of tune, like more than a whole semitone out, and I couldn’t realise as I just wasn’t hearing myself at all through the monitors, I only found out at the end of the song and I hope I’ll never know what people heard from the outside during all that time!

Tell us something about you / each member that you think people would be surprised about?

We don’t actually drink as much? (laugh) And there is a massive massive component of pure music nerdiness in our lives that just defines us so bad, I think some might think that for us everything is just about making noise and being loud and I would say “yes it is, but not entirely, never look at things from too close!”

If you had to describe your band/music to an alien how would you describe it?

I would definitely try to find a way to explain to them that our music kind of represents all of those little combined factors that turn humans into the chaos that they are as creatures of this universe! We are a big chaos with some massive hidden potential, I think that’s what I’d try to explain to them about our music!

What makes you stand out as a band?

I think the vastness and deepness of our sound are what might distinguish us as a band amongst the infinite and amazing acts that can be included in the big big ‘sphere’ of what we call alternative rock. We want to create a sound that describes how profound our feelings are, not profound as in ‘deep’ necessarily but as how rooted and grounded they are to our soul and to the core of who we are as individuals. The music has to act as a mirror for what’s impossible to explain and we always try to take great care of that!

Right now, what’s pissing you off the most? (Can’t say the virus )

Way too many things? I really don’t want to turn this interview into a rant (laugh), there are so many dynamics related to how just the music industry works that very often make you want to quit but I’ll just leave it there for now, we make music because we love it to bits and that’s all that matters!

What’s your favourite song to play live and why?

Personally, I would say ‘Sparkle’ as I just love to sing and play it, especially the verses, it’s almost the only moment of our current setlist where I don’t play guitar and that makes me able to just put all my energies and emotions into one thing. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy every single second of being on stage, those verses are just a sort of ‘personal’ moment to me in a way!

‘Bullets Little Thoughts’ is the funniest to play though because of the bridge structure and the guitar solos and melodies/riffs in it, that’s for sure!

I hear you have a new single what can you tell us about it?

Yes! We just released the last single, ‘Empires’, off our debut EP called ‘a ghost & a wish’ and we are both incredibly proud and excited for it. It tells the story of what the last, let’s say, 4/5 years of our lives have been; past that will always be there and that will forever haunt us like a ghost, and the light of a future that we crave and want to grab so much, like a little secret or a golden wish, so fragile but yet incredibly bright!

Talk me through the thought process of the single. What was the recording process like?

We first started working on this EP almost two years ago then obviously covid happened and that kind of slowed everything down so much up until almost killing it completely. At the time we were ready to go into the studio with our producer and deliver the best soundscapes and tones of our lives but the pandemic forced us to work at a distance and that made all the process harder for an infinite amount of reasons, some bands managed better than we did that’s for sure but we really got hit by all of it. We never gave up though and sticking to our goal and desire we pushed through and managed to finish all the recordings, with an almost one-year delay we are now so proud to finally release these 4 songs together.
Our producer has done an incredible and beyond phenomenal job being able to cope with all the five of us and put together every single piece perfectly, creating the best sound that we could’ve hoped for by recording remotely! There are a lot of improvements and adjustments that we are working on regarding our tone and infinite more instruments and sounds that we want to incorporate into our future music but for now we couldn’t be any less proud of what we achieved with this EP, Matteo Galesi (producer) deserves as much credits as we do for this one!

What was the biggest learning curve in writing the single?

I think when you come up with an idea you quickly create a very specific shape of it in your mind, only when that idea and concept is shared and consequently mutated, enhanced, polished, redefined and rearranged, that’s when it turns into what it was really born to be! I wrote all these songs around four/five years ago and rearranging them with the band has been both a challenge and an amazing journey at the same time. When you have an idea to develop with other people, the more you share about it with them, the more you learn about it, it’s a very fascinating process!

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

Absolutely not! We will do different things in different ways in the future but this journey has taught all of us so much that I wouldn’t change a single thing now, we are all extremely proud of this songs and we just want everyone to hear them now!

What are your plans for the year ahead?

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?
We are currently working on a real lot of new music, it’s a combination of sounds and tones that come from different kinds of music and that we wanted to have together in the same place, we are actually beyond excited about the demos that we are currently sitting on and, even if this debut EP hasn’t even come out yet, our minds are already set to the new chapter of this band and everything that will come with it! If you liked what we have done so far then you are about to fall in love with what’s about to come and that is a promise!
