RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW THE EVER INTERESTING COUPDEKAT
Hiya, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today, grab a brew and take a seat.
What made you decide to become a soloist?
Lockdown kinda forced me into it, I didn’t really have the confidence before but suddenly I had no choice!
Introduce us to you and your musical history?
Okay so my name is Kat and I live in London, I started writing songs when I was like 14, and I was in a few bands until I was 18, but nothing was really moving, and then I started coupdekat and I feel like I’ve found my place in music now!
What’s one question you’re sick of being asked when interviewed?
hmmm that’s a hard one, I don’t think there’s one specific, but I’ve had a lot of like deep questions when sometimes I just want to be asked what my favourite good is haha
What was the most fun you have had on stage?
for my first show, I asked a few friends to let off confetti canons in the last song, when they went off it was so surreal and kinda magical, but the clean up afterward was not fun at all 😂
What was the worst experience on stage?
Hmm, I haven’t really had any big mishaps so far (touch wood), I lost my voice a few days before a gig once but got it back for the night of course!
Tell us something about you that you think people would be surprised about?
Hmm hard one, well a few people have assumed that I party a lot when they see my Instagram stories but actually, I can’t hack more than one night out a week otherwise I’m exhausted, I’m a bit of a grandma tbh.
If you had to describe your music to an alien how would you describe it?
Urm I’d say my music is all about the crazy boring things on earth and that I’d prefer to satire about things in their world
Right now, what’s pissing you off the most? (Can’t say the virus )
Urm it’s boring but probably the weather, like it’s so grey and sad right now, I just want it to be summer!
What’s your favourite song to play live and why?
Little Tesco’s I think! it just sounds so nice live because all the recorded instruments can be properly played live so, so far that’s the one I enjoy the most!
I hear you have a new single, what can you tell us about it?
Well it’s called ‘F.Y.E.O’ and it’s all about love online and nudes and trying to stop slut shaming online because it’s such a big problem for my generation and younger and I feel like no one really speaks about it in music, especially from a females perspective
Talk me through the thought process of the single?
I wanted to write about something that had affected me growing up, in order to help younger generations, I feel like education around nudes and online relationships is always represented negatively and I want to change that narrative because it’s really the younger generations love language. In Snapchat, there is a ‘For your eyes only’ album and so that’s really where my main inspiration came from
What was the recording process like?
Super fun actually, we did two sessions, one I set up myself and recorded all alone, I wanted to do this because this song is pretty intimate and personal so I wanted to properly capture my voice and certain words correctly, and then I recorded the main vocals again with my producer Ryan and then we mixed it all together
What are your plans for the year ahead?
more released music for sure! I wanna travel a bit as well and write about my experiences, I spent a lot of last years (like most of us) in my room so I just plan to get outside more and meet people ahah.
