Hiya The North Sound, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat.
What was life like for you before you got into music?
It’s hard to remember that honestly. Music has always been a part of our lives in one way or another. What I can say is that music was a safe place and provided guidance and a purpose in a chaotic life. Those were not easy to find back then.
What’s the live music scene like in Saskatoon right now? Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)?
Saskatoon has alot of great folx in it. It’s a artsy city that is community minded so there are all kinds of artists being nurtured there. Some of our favourites are Ray The Nihilist, The Garry’s, Conor Cassidy and Gunner and Smith. A little bit of everything there for ya.
It seems like being a social media curator has become added to the many jobs of a musician, how do you feel about this?
It is what it is. There are enjoyable parts about social media as well as soul sucking parts but it’s all a part of the job. Deciding to make your passion your job comes with sacrifices and if you’re not willing to make those sacrifices than it might not be for you. I look at it as free promo for the music. How do you manage engagement on your socials?
Like we would if the person was in front of us. We wouldn’t ignore someone talking to us or wouldn’t leave a person hanging if they gave a polite wave. It’s all people at the end of the day and people aren’t so bad. Except the bots and fake music promo accounts. They’re the worst.
What’s your view on the Music industry today?
I kinda feels like the Wild West. No one really knows what works, the landscape is always changing and it can be cut throat if you don’t learn how to navigate it. There is always a rich business person pushing an agenda but the cowboys and outlaws usually end up the heroes in the end.
Where do you feel you currently sit within the music industry?
I think we’re still in our infancy. We’ve been fortunate to play some great shows, record some music and work with an incredible team but we have so much more in the tank. I don’t think we’re anywhere near close to our full potential and that’s a great place to be.
Whats the biggest thing you have learned recently as you progress with your music?
To stay consistent. Write and play as much as you can because you never know what will happen. Don’t wait for a boom or bust, just keep working and growing personally and musically.
What was your best experience on stage?
A few years back we got to play the halftime show for our CFL Team the Saskatchewan Roughriders. It was a wild experience and they treated us and our family so well. Playing to 28,000 people was pretty cool too.
What was your worst experience on stage?
We don’t have enough time for that lol.
Tell us something about you / each member that you think people would be surprised about.
We’ve been together since high school ! We met in band class in a science lab where Nevada played flute and Forrest played percussion. High school sweethearts turned partners in literally everything.
I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?
Our new album What It Takes is out and it’s a record packed full of harmonies and stories that are meant to connect us and the listeners. It’s an honest record about what life after addiction and early recovery is like.
What was the recording process like?
It was different for us. We recorded parts of it in Nashville, parts of it in Toronto and parts of it in our closet at home. It took us awhile to get it right but we just trusted the process, trusted our team and trusted our guts and it couldn’t have came out any other way. We’re very proud of this record.
What was the biggest learning curve in writing the new tunes?
Getting rid of that inner critic is always a challenge. We’ve been suppressing it by not putting pressure on what we’re writing. We just write until the song is done and then figure out what we want to do with it later. Seems to be working for us.
Would you change anything now it’s finished?
Nah. Everything happens for a reason and it is the way it’s meant to be.
Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?
Thanks for taking the time to read this. We really do appreciate it and we hope you will check out the record. Give us a follow us on all your social things and connect with us!
