THE OCEAN BENEATH

RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW THE OCEAN BENEATH

What was life like for you before you got into music? I got into music during high school so before that I had really no idea what my passions were or what I wanted to do.

What’s the live music scene like in Leeds right now? Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)? Leeds is full of great venues and has a really good atmosphere around the music scene. If you’re around Leeds be sure to go check out Hope and Social or any of the many DJ’s playing at Warehouse.

It seems like being a social media curator has become added to the many jobs of a musician, how do you feel about this? Social media is a blessing and a curse in my eyes, I try to stay on the music and just put that out there with a small amount of social posting.

How do you manage engagement on your socials? Just be honest and try to take everything people say on board.

What’s your view on the Music industry today? There’s so much great music out there and it’s all so easily available, I think some of the small record shops around Leeds are doing a great job at keeping the industry alive. There’s no better feeling than stumbling upon a great record you didn’t expect to see.

Where do you feel you currently sit within the music industry? To be honest just creating music and putting it out there for people to hear is all that concerns me. Where do I sit? Not sure, I’ll let others decide on that/

Whats the biggest thing you have learned recently as you progress with your music? Just go with ideas and let yourself see where it takes you, I do this all the time and the tracks rarely make it further in them initial idea sessions but I come back to stuff from years ago now and end up trying to finish them.

Tell us something about you that you think people would be surprised about. Not sure, I’ve never had any kind of musical lesson if that warrants a reaction?

I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it? Yeah, Electron Fields with Keeper of Bees is out now, it’s a positive and uplifting house track that me and Vicky worked on for over a year. We’re super proud of it.

What was the recording process like? Like I say the recording and production took over a year on Electron Fields. It actually started as a much slower ballad idea that Vicky had and I just kept increasing the tempo in Ableton with her demos until we landed on that perfect house tempo. After that we got Ben Stinson at Loom Studio to help with some of the vocal recording work and then I took it all away and worked on it for a hell of a long time. We also got it mastered by the legend that is Cass Irvine (Camelphat, Franky Wah)

THE OCEAN BENEATH

What was the biggest learning curve in writing the new tunes? Producing Electron Fields got me into some really interesting ways to manipulate sound, there’s actually a percussion loop made from the guide ropes hitting the side of the boats on a reservoir and some other fun stuff like that going on.

Would you change anything now it’s finished? I’d maybe have put out another version alongside this one, maybe a longer mix.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world? Electron Fields is out now on all platforms and be sure to go check out Vicky (Keeper of Bees) playing live some time.
